Travel insurer finds Brits willing to pay £1,478 extra to feel safer abroad

Brits are prepared to spend up to £1,478 extra on holidays in order to feel safe abroad, a new poll by AllClear Travel Insurance has revealed.

That marks for a £932 increase compared to a similar survey the brand ran six months. The top areas where Brits were willing to spend more included a choice of airline, private excursions, and the quality of their resort.

Of course the Covid-19 pandemic continues to be a huge factor when it comes to planning holidays.

76% of Brits said they are more likely to take precautions on holiday compared to pre-pandemic, while half admitted they would pick a destination based on its safety in terms of Covid-19, and others said they would also take into account the risk of a country going into lockdown.

Non-essential travel will resume from England and Scotland from May 17, with countries placed on green, amber and red lists which will determine quarantine and testing requirements.

The green lists - which slightly differ for both nations - are the most appealing for holidaymakers as they won't require quarantine on your return in the UK. (Although you will still need to take a pre-departure test and a PCR test on day two of being back).

The government has said it will operate a 'green watchlist' to warn holidaymakers if a green country could be placed back on amber, the latter requiring self-isolation at home for 10 days, and two PCR tests.

It's therefore not surprising that travel insurance has been at the forefront of Brits' minds.

On average, those surveyed said they would be prepared to spend an extra 25% on quality cover this year.

In regards to Covid specifically, Brits are willing to fork out an extra £99 which includes Covid cover, as well as an extra £103 to cover pre-existing medical conditions.

Chris Rolland, CEO of AllClear Travel Insurance, commented: "What our research finds - time and again - is that people in the UK are taking their safety more and more seriously. They are prepared to spend more on ensuring this than ever before, are conscious of the potential risks and are taking the right action in advance to minimise these risks."

He later added: "With more and more insurers putting Covid-19 policies into their packages, now is the best time to protect yourself on holiday with annual cover that you can trust. Most policies are now well equipped with cancellation clauses that are there to take the stress out of the decision for customers."
