Former Travel Guide stars Stack and Mel have claimed that dismal salaries and rejected pay negotiations led them to exit the reality series after being a part of the cast for six seasons.
The twin sisters, who ventured all over the world for the jet-setting show from 2017 to 2023, spoke of their salary on an episode of the Smoko Room podcast, saying their “wasn’t enough money in it” and that the minimal pay ultimately prompted their exit from the cast.
“There just wasn’t enough money in it,” Mel claimed on the podcast. “You can’t go away for six months of the year, maintain a mortgage and f***ing live.”
While she didn’t reveal specific figures, Mel claimed the Travel Guides pay was low enough to prompt a renegotiation of their salaries with the network — a move which apparently did not go over well.
“We did it for seven years and I said to Stack, ‘We’re going to have to either pull the pin [or] ask for more money. So we asked for more money and they didn’t handle that real well,” Mel claimed.
Elaborating on the comments, Stack said that unlike some of her Travel Guides co-stars — who were “sort of financially stable” outside of the show — she and Mel were not in a financial position to continue on with the low salaries.
“Yeah, we’re not silver-spoon fed f***ers so we have to go to work and hustle,” Mel added. “And if we can’t pay our own bills off our own back we have no one to ask.”
Elsewhere in the podcast, Mel claimed Travel Guides encouraged her to return to filming too soon after she’d given birth, saying producers told her to “just leave [her daughter] at home and come travel”.
“I was like, ‘Get f***ed,’” Mel recalled of her response.
The former reality star said juggling the low salary with new parenthood prompted her and Stack to depart Travel Guides after a six-season run.
“I just couldn’t afford my mortgage… … [the salary] wasn’t enough to pay the mortgage, put it that way – and I do not have a big mortgage,” Mel said. “So I was like, ‘Well, the TV stuff has to go’ and I had to bunker down and put my little girl first.”

Travel Guides’ ninth season is currently airing, with this year’s instalment including newcomer castmates like Married At First Sight’s Lucinda Light and The Block’s Eliza and Liberty Paschke.
