Travel firm currently offering tours in Ukraine despite 'real risk to life'

The UK Foreign Office urges people to avoid Ukraine wherever possible due to a "real risk to life", however despite the dangers, a travel firm is offering guided day tours.

Visit Ukraine.Today launched tours across the country's cities last month, with titles including "Persistent and hardy Sumy" and "Strong and invincible Bucha and Irpin" that could see visitors guided through the conflict-stricken areas. The tours apparently seek to show travellers what life looks like amid the conflict.

The country is currently under Martial Law, with circumstances that could change rapidly due to Russia’s invasion and with parts of the country having fallen under under Russian control. The Foreign office have also warned that terrorist attacks in Ukraine can’t be ruled out.

Official advice states that you should not visit the country, and those still in Ukraine should leave immediately if it is safe to do so. Until the conflict comes to an end, this guidance will likely remain in place.

Despite the clear dangers and official warnings stating that the country should be avoided, CEO of Visit Ukraine.Today, Anton Taranenko, told CNN Travel that the company is welcoming tourists.

He said: "Maybe across the street from where a bomb recently struck you'll see friends eating nice traditional food at a re-opened bistro."

The company claims that it has sold 150 tickets so far and website traffic has been up since the invasion began. Anton clarifies that his tours do not offer "dark tourism", which is when visitors travel to get a first-hand glimpse of death, disaster and destruction around the world, saying that life goes on in the country.

He says: "Children are growing up, we try to live life as much as possible no matter what."

Meanwhile, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office travel advice for Ukraine reads: "The Russian invasion of Ukraine is ongoing, with attacks against a number of major cities. Several towns and cities in southern and eastern Ukraine are temporarily under Russian control. There is a real risk to life.

"We continue to advise British nationals against all travel to Ukraine, whether in an official or unofficial capacity."
