Travel experts hoping show encourages people on once-in-a-lifetime adventures

Explorers from across the globe will descend on the capital this weekend to help Londoners take on once-in-a-lifetime travel adventures.

Experts who have completed awe-inspiring challenges will be on hand at The Olympia in Kensington to advise those looking to do their own expeditions.

The Adventure Travel Show will feature over 100 travel experts from around the world, including American climber Chris Sharma, offering ideas for small group adventures and overland and sea expeditions to career break projects as well as walking and trekking routes and safaris.

British explorer, writer and photographer Levison Wood, who will be giving a talk at the two-day show, said: “Everyone has the right to their own adventure, no matter how big or small, but too often are people unaware of it.”

Known for his expeditions, Walking the Nile, Walking the Himalayas and Walking the Americas, which have been turned into best-selling books, he added: “Gone are the days of planting flagpoles in maps. Nowadays, exploration and adventure are about going on a personal journey.”

Ian McClelland, who runs UK expedition company Turn Wild and will be giving a seminar at the event on travelling in Greenland, said: “Adventure is one of the true gifts of life. Nothing compares to immersing yourself into different cultures, seeing different ecosystems and appreciating the full glory of nature at its finest.”

He added: “But anyone taking on a challenge should make sure they are properly prepared physically and mentally for the demands of their adventure. Nature can be harsh as well as beautiful.”
