Travel expert urges holidaymakers to do this one thing when hiring a car abroad to save money

A travel expert is urging anyone going on holiday to do one vital thing when renting a car abroad.

Chelsea, who shares her tips on Instagram as the Cheap Holiday Expert cheapholidayexp, told her followers: "This right here is why you should always take a video of your car hire when you pick it up.” The traveller ran into trouble while dropping off a rental car in Lisbon, Portugal.

She said: "We’ve just dropped off our hire car, we got someone to come and take a look at it which is what we always like to do. You want to be there with them when they do their final checks.

"He went round the car and he went ‘ah there’s some scratches there that aren’t marked on the document’, ugh. Fortunately for us James always takes a full video of the car when we pick it up.

"James was able to say to him ‘no, look here, the car already had these, this isn’t us that did it’. The guy went ‘cool, absolutely fine there’s no charge here."

Thankfully Chelsea was able to return the car without picking up unfair charges due to a detailed video that her travel partner had taken of the vehicle before they'd set off, reports Birmingham Live.

She captioned the video: “The scratches in question were so tiny that we genuinely missed them with our rubbish human eyes, which is why we didn’t flag it as not being noted on the paperwork (always do that if you do spot something not noted down on pick up!)

“Fortunately, James’ camera caught the fact that the scratches were indeed there before us and so the guy signing the car off gave us a thumbs up for no additional charges - PHEW." You can see more of Chelsea's cheap car hire tips here.
