Travel expert shares trick for how to pack the most clothes without paying for carry-on bag

A travel expert has shared a clever way to pack a weeks worth of clothes on a flight without paying the extra charge for a carry-on bag.

A number of budget airlines now charge you to bring what used to be a free 10kg carry on bag onto the flight.

Instead, they only allow one small personal bag to be brought on board for free - which must fit under the seat in front of you.

The dimensions for this bag are specified by each airline, so as long as the bag fits the dimensions (and does not contain any controlled or banned items) you can bring it on the plane free of charge.

People have come up with a number of hacks to get around this luggage restriction, from stuffing your neck pillow with your socks and underwear to stuffing an actual pillow with jumpers and jeans, but this idea from TikToker @trippedtravelgear is much more sensible.

The company, who make travel gear, advises getting a compression bag, that is traditionally used by hikers on long trips or in your home for storage, to get the most out of your limited space.

She said: "This is how you are going to save so much money travelling. Most airlines will allow you to take at least one personal item - even Ryanair and Spirit Airlines."

"But then they'll try to charge $60 to bring a carry-on bag or a regular suitcase. If you ask me, that's pure robbery. Luckily for you, I have a fix for that."

She then shows her compression bag, which has a special reinforced zip that flattens everything down once you have packed it.

"The special part about this is when you zip this up, it's going to compress everything down and make it super skinny," she said.

You can buy speciality airline compression bags, or pick one up from a sports store like Decathlon or Amazon.

They work to minimise the space your clothing takes up in your personal bag, which could be rucksack or small gear bag, meaning you might not have the need to purchase a separate 10kg carry on bag.

However, make sure you have an iron to hand wherever you are going, as compression clothing can often leave them creased and crumpled when you unpack.
