Travel chaos expected at busy European airport

  • All flights departing Brussels Airport are cancelled on Thursday, 12 March, due to a national demonstration and 24-hour industrial action.
  • The strike, involving major trade unions and staff from security and ground handling companies, is over unpaid labour and pension reforms.
  • Brussels Airport anticipates "major disruptions to operations" and has advised travellers not to arrive at the airport on the affected day.
  • Airlines are contacting passengers regarding cancellations, with some offering free rebooking for flights between 11 and 19 March.
  • Brussels Charleroi Airport is also affected, with scheduled departures and arrivals cancelled due to a lack of available staff, and some public transport disruption is expected from 8 March.
