Travel chaos at Euston station with trains axed and passengers hit by 90 minute delays after derailment

London Euston passengers face further disruption on Friday (Stefan Rousseau/PA) - (PA Wire)

Passengers from Euston have been warned they face further disruption on Friday after a train derailment caused "chaos" with 90 minute delays and services being cancelled.

Multiple lines closed after the "low speed derailment" happened in the Bletchley area in Buckinghamshire at around midday on Thursday.

Passengers continued to face delays in the evening with the warning that the disruption was expected to last until the end of the day.

Passengers were kept outside Euston as the concourse became packed with people trying to get on trains.

In a further update on Thursday evening Network Rail said: "Passengers are being urged to check their journeys this evening and throughout Friday (27 June) with National Rail Enquiries and their train operator while recovery work continues.

"Specialist teams are working around the clock on a plan to safely move the derailed train, repair the affected track and fully reopen the railway as soon as possible."

Gary Walsh, Director for Network Rail’s West Coast South route, said: "If you're planning to travel on Thursday evening or throughout Friday, please check with your train operator or at www.nationalrail.co.uk for the latest journey information.”

The London Northwestern Railway train had no passengers on board when it derailed.

The train remained upright and no injuries were reported.

Affected routes included the Avanti West Coast between London Euston and Birmingham New Street; Stoke-on-Trent; Wolverhampton; Manchester Piccadilly; Chester; Wrexham General; Crewe; Holyhead; Liverpool Lime Street; Preston; Blackpool North; Glasgow Central or Edinburgh, and the London Northwestern Railway between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central; Northampton; Birmingham New Street or Crewe.

A spokesperson from London Northwestern Railway said: "Any passengers delayed by 15 minutes or more as a result of the disruption are entitled to compensation against the cost of their ticket under the Delay Repay scheme."
