Travel chaos as hundreds trapped on covid hit Stena Line ferry

Travel chaos is ongoing after hundreds of passengers were left stranded on a Stena Line ferry overnight.

The incident happened after six crew members on the Liverpoo l to Belfast crossing tested positive for covid on Tuesday night.

Passengers were not able to disembark the Stena Edda ship until shortly after 11am on Wednesday, despite the ferry not moving through the night.

Now more crossings have been cancelled as a result of the overnight delays, leaving people worried they won't be able to travel before Christmas.

A spokesperson for Stena Line confirmed to the ECHO that all passengers due to travel on Wednesday during the day, had been cancelled to allow Tuesday night's passengers to get to Northern Ireland on the Stena Mersey.

Wednesday night's sailing, which would have been carried by the Stena Edda, was cancelled as well as the company work with public health bodies to determine when it will be safe for use.

It is currently still docked at Birkenhead ferry termina l until further notice.

In a statement on Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for Stena Line said: "Stena Line can confirm that six members of the crew of the Stena Edda have tested positive for Covid-19 last night.

"In line with our safety protocols we alerted the Port Health Authorities, who advised us to hold the vessel in Birkenhead as a precaution.

"322 passengers and 53 crew are onboard. The six crew members who tested positive for Covid-19 are being cared for and are doing well, with only mild symptoms.

"Fifteen close contacts have been identified and are self-isolating.

"Stena Line is liaising closely with public health authorities on this matter who have advised us that we should disembark the vessel in Birkenhead.

"The welfare of our passengers and crew is paramount at this time. The passengers are being catered for and we will assist them with alternative travel arrangements."

On Twitter, a number of customers have posted about whether their sailing would go ahead as usual.

User @ connorm_photo was told that the 10.30am sailing on Friday was still scheduled to depart but customers should keep an eye on FerryCheck over the coming days just in case.

Conor McCabrey was on the ferry that was affected and tweeted to say: "On the boat from Liverpool to Belfast that was meant to take off at 10.30pm and they’ve just said after 5hours on this boat we have to wait until 9am to disembark.

"Sitting on a boat for 12hours and no closer to home and without any ways of getting there."

All passengers on the ferry on Tuesday night were given full refunds and were moved on to Wednesday's sailing.
