Travel chaos as Glasgow road shut down and raft of train services halted amid flooding

Torrential downpours are wreaking havoc in Glasgow as roads are shut down and a raft of train services have been halted.

ScotRail has warned customers that a number of services have been cancelled due to the bad weather.

In an update to passengers, the train operator said: "We have had reports of flooding between Hillfoot and Bearsden.

"For safety reasons, services will be unable to operate to/from Milngavie and will be terminated short of destination and restarted en route until the water level drops."

This is affecting a raft of services - including Springburn-Milngavie, which are terminating at Partick, and Edinburgh-Milngavie which is terminating at Hyndland.

One local said: "I’m in Milngavie, it’s taking a beating. Loads of localised flooding. Several main roads impassable."

Police have also had to shut down roads in Glasgow and are urging people to find other routes as flash floods cause chaos.

The force told locals Boclair Road, between Auchenhowie Road and Milngavie Road, and Manse Road in Bearsden is closed.

Scotland has been hit with flood alerts after forecasters issued a weather warning for thunderstorms as the wet spell enters its fourth day.

The Met Office alert is in place from midday until 11pm today, with torrential rain, lightning and hail expected to lash down across an 11-hour period.
