Travel and flooding chaos in Perth as storm results in school closure

Perth witnessed one of its severest storms in many years through the night, resulting in mass flooding across the region.

Lightning beamed across the sky for hours while thunder - many saying louder than ever heard before in the Fair City - rumbled on continuously.

Those in Perth’s city centre awoke to large areas of flooding.  Marshall Place was under water and parts of Craigie were among the worst affected.

Photos of cars surrounded by water soon emerged in locations such as Queens Court.

Perth was one of the wettest spots in the country with an estimated 90mm falling overnight.

Rail services have been greatly affected and Perth Railway Station’s Platform 4 resembled a canal on Wednesday morning.

Perth and Kinross Council said there were “several ongoing incidents in and around Perth”, noting that several roads were impassable.

The local authority singled out Feus Road/Marshall Place/Wallace Crescent/Crammond Place/Crieff Road/ Glasgow Road and the A912 at Bogle Bridge.

Schools across the region were set to welcome pupils back - some for their first day - but Perth High School has now announced they have been forced to close due to flooding.

More to follow.
