A travel agent who allegedly sold a string of bookings to customers before they were cancelled behind their backs has been hit with fraud charges.

Police arrested a 53-year-old woman in Kingsgrove, in southern Sydney, on Friday morning before she was granted bail at Sutherland Local Court.

It is alleged she failed to honour bookings made by 16 different customers, with those trips subsequently cancelled without their knowledge and with no refunds issued.

The woman has been charged with 16 counts of dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception.

Police did not reveal the value of the bookings she is alleged to have pocketed.

She will be back in court on July 1.
