'Trash mob' to clear up disgusting mess left in Backworth - how you can get involved

Backworth residents have formed a 'trash mob' in a bid to clean up their historic village.

In the last week, 13 people have been out with black bags and litter pickers, collecting rubbish from the streets, paths, roadsides and hedges.

The volunteers have picked up everything from old tyres to bags of rotting fish.

Angie Doughty, who kicked off the project with a post on the Melrose Avenue WhatsApp group, said: “Beautiful, historic Backworth was being disfigured by littering and fly-tipping.

"It’s great that so many people have done so much in just a few days. It’s also been good to get support from local services.”

The mob is well supported with more people showing up and the work is spreading out across the village.

Lesley Wood, who takes part in the trash mob, added: "The next one is on Friday. We have done a good job but we need to spread out a bit more.

"What we would like to do is stop people from fly-tipping."

The trash mob will meet on Friday, April 2 at 9.30am at the junction of Backworth Lane and Killingworth Avenue.
