Trapped Thai soccer team and international rescuers captured in viral cartoon

A cartoon depicting each of the 12 members of the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach trapped in Thailand's Tham Luang cave system has captured the attention of tens of thousands of people.

The image by artist Sisidea uses animal representations to represent each of the trapped boys and the huge cohort of international helpers.

Eight boys were rescued in the first two days of the rescue effort.

The next, and hopefully final, phase of the rescue operation is underway.

Sisidea's cartoon is circulating widely on social media — a post on the Thai Navy SEALs Facebook page alone has been shared by more than 55,000 people.

The original image includes explanations for each cartoon character in Thai, but Aor Panasoot provided an English translation on the SEALs page.

Australia's helpers are represented by a kangaroo, the head of the rescue operation Narongsak Osottanakorn is shown as an elephant, and Tesla billionaire Elon Musk — who has built at least one miniature submarine for the children which may or may not be used — appears as Marvel superhero Iron Man.

Other artworks inspired by the rescue effort have also been shared on social media:
