Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has revealed he was taken to hospital and underwent an operation after falling off his bike over the weekend.

Mr Shapps said he had been “patched up” by NHS staff at the New QEII and Lister hospitals in Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage.

The Conservative MP for Welwyn Hatfield expressed his relief that he was wearing his cycling helmet, saying the incident could otherwise have been much more serious.

He took to Twitter on Sunday night to post details of the accident, which happened on Saturday.

“In and out of hospital after coming off my bike while out this weekend,” he wrote.

“Big thanks to brilliant NHS staff @enherts QE2 & Lister Hospitals who patched me up yesterday, followed by a minor op on my lip today. Thank goodness for bike helmet, without which it could have been worse!”
