Transport for Wales has new Welsh-language announcements and they're laughably bad

Transport for Wales are in the process of updating their bilingual station announcements and passengers have complained about how laughably bad the Welsh version is.

The computer generate voice which is being played at some stations in south Wales, stumbles over the Welsh words, making the language completely incomprehensible.

Rail users have highlighted how hilarious the announcements sound, while others have criticised the attempted bilingual system, describing it as "disrespectful."

One passenger said: "The English speaking voice that can't pronounce place names is now attempting full Welsh announcements. If nothing else you've got to laugh."

Another added: "Your new 'Welsh speaking' computer generated lady's announcement voice on the station platform had us all in stitches this morning! Hilarious pronunciation. Maybe get a 'real' person to speak in Welsh? I get it will make us all laugh every day!"

One rail user described the announcement as "gobbeldegook", adding that it was very "confusing and disresepectful."

Someone pointed out the irony that Transport for Wales "can't even have announcements in Welsh" before adding:  "Madness!"

And one commuter noted: "It sounded like a robot having a total meltdown. When the announcement came on in Welsh, everyone on the platform just turned with a look as if to say 'what the hell is that?'."

The issue has been ongoing for several days, but Transport for Wales insisted the announcements are not a permanent fixture.

A spokesman for Transport for Wales said: "We're currently in the process of upgrading our bilingual station announcements system which is undergoing technical tests before going live soon.

"We are aware of a small technical issue which will be resolved shortly."
