Transport blamed for West Lothian recording rising pollution levels

West Lothian was one of the only areas in the UK to show a rise in CO2 emissions over the year.

The latest statistics, ending the year up to December 2019, from the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) figures show that CO2 emissions in West Lothian increased by one per cent compared to the year before.

Therefore, the county was one 19 of only 379 local authorities throughout Britain not to see a decrease in the statistics ending in the year 2019.

Transport was responsible for the largest amount of CO2 pollution in West Lothian, at 388,000 tonnes.

The Zero Carbon campaign say changes are required.

A spokesman said: “To reach net zero emissions by 2050 and deliver our even more ambitious target to reduce emissions by 78% by 2035, we need to decarbonise much further, faster and across a far greater section of our economy.

“The Government must deliver an economy-wide, net-zero aligned policy programme which protects low-income households from increased costs and emphasises the benefits that will be derived from the low-carbon transition.”
