CHENNAI: Thanks to the timely intervention of the Madras high court, a 27-year-old chronic kidney patient is set to undergo transplant surgery, as the authorisation committee which was sitting on his request to approve kidney donation from a person who is not his blood relative, has finally approved the donation.
On Thursday, while disposing of a plea moved by Sanjay Simon, Justice S M Subramaniam directed the committee to take appropriate action after scrutinizing the documents. On May 20, the committee approved the request of the petitioner.
Since the petitioner could not find a match from his relatives, one of his acquaintances T Vijayalakshmi came forward to donate her kidney moved by the suffering undergone by the petitioner.
Though Sanjay made a representation to the committee on April 1, the committee did not take a decision since Vijayalakshmi was not his blood relative. Aggrieved, Sanjay moved the high court. He submitted that he was suffering from end stage renal failure and is undergoing dialysis thrice a week. Due to prolonged dialysis, he suffered unbearable pain.
When the plea came up for hearing, additional advocate-general J Ravindran submitted that the committee meeting was scheduled to be held on May 20 and a decision would be made during the meeting. The petitioners, along with an attender, must produce all the relevant documents before the committee for consideration and for the scrutinization of documents, and the committee will take a decision with reference to the grant of approval, he said.
On May 20, after scrutinizing the documents, the committee approved the donation and transplant surgery considering the genuineness of the request.
