TransPennine Express has announced it will scrap 17 services from Liverpool to the North East and Edinburgh after Christmas delays.
Train passengers face weeks of disruption because of mass cancellations on the Liverpool to Edinburgh route as services will be temporarily stopped.
The move comes after the roll-out of a new fleet of trains is taking longer than expected, Chronicle Live reports.
This means 17 of the operator's services that call at Liverpool, Manchester, York, Leeds, Darlington, Durham and Newcastle will be out of action until January 24.
TransPennine Express also blamed a maintenance backlog and infrastructure issues for causing a delay in staff training.
Leo Goodwin, the operator's managing director, apologised to commuters and said the firm was "working hard" to get back on track.
He said: “I am truly sorry for the continued disruption to journeys this week. I know what a busy time it is juggling work and visiting loved ones during the holiday period.
"As we bring in our new trains it has had an associated impact upon our training schedule and our train maintenance plan which is having a knock-on effect to our services. Our current performance is not acceptable and we are working hard to fix this.”
