Translink suspends tickets to Helen's Bay to deal with huge passenger numbers amid heatwave

Beachgoers looking to buy a train ticket to Helen's Bay may struggle now that Translink has suspended ticket sales to cope with capacity.

Hundreds have been travelling to the idyllic destination as temperatures continue to soar across the country - with the whole of Northern Ireland on an amber weather warning for the second day in a row.

In a statement released this afternoon, Translink confirmed there was high demand for services on the Bangor line, and that the company was therefore stopping anymore people from being able to purchase tickets to Helen's Bay in a bid to manage capacity for the return journey this evening.

And a number of other travel restrictions are also expected.

Rail services are subject to speed restrictions and subsequent delays due to the high temperatures on tracks.

"Where possible passengers should consider if their journey is completely necessary and if travelling allow extra time for their journey," Translink said.

"We would also remind passengers that carrying or consuming alcohol on board our services is not permitted and we are working closely with the PSNI to deter any anti-social behaviour issues."

All passengers must continue to wear a face covering in respect of others, unless exempt themselves, Translink said.

Use of hand sanitisers at stations and cashless payments are also being urged over the coming days.

Passengers are being urged to check Translink website, use the journey planner or follow Translink on social media for the latest travel updates.

"We would like to thank all our passengers for their patience and understanding at this time," the statement added.
