Translink Metro bus catches fire in West Belfast

A Translink Metro bus caught fire in Belfast this morning. Emergency Services were called to the scene shortly after 9am in the west of the city.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and PSNI were tasked to the Suffolk Road at 9.10am this morning, Saturday, July 23 following reports of a bus on fire in the area.

A Translink spokesperson said: “The driver of a Metro bus travelling towards Belfast City Centre along Suffolk Road at approx. 9.10 this morning noticed smoke from the engine bay.

“The driver safely disembarked the passengers and another bus was sent to enable them to continue their journey. There were no injuries.

“The fire service and PSNI were alerted and the bus was recovered. An investigation is currently underway.”

A spokesperson for NI Fire and Rescue Service told Belfast Live: "We received a report of a bus on fire at 9.10am this morning in the Suffolk Road area. We sent two appliances and an officer to the scene.

"The situation was under control at 9.36am and we handed the scene over to the police."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Officers received and responded to a report of a bus on fire in the Suffolk Road area of Belfast shortly after 9.10am today, Saturday 23rd July.

"Colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service also attended the incident and extinguished the blaze." The cause of the fire is not being treated as suspicious at this time."
