Detectives are investigating the drive-by shooting of a transgender woman in Dallas as a hate crime.
The gunman opened fire on the victim in the street after shouting “a number of slurs regarding her gender identity”, according to police.
He then drove off in a red Chevrolet truck with oversize wheel rims, leaving the woman with multiple injuries to the chest and arm.
She received emergency treatment at hospital following the attack in Dennis Road on Friday night.
Due to the seriousness of her injuries she was not able to speak to detectives about the attack until Sunday.
Dallas Police Department are now appealing for help from the public identifying the suspect, described only as a Latin male.
“This offence is being investigated as a hate crime,” the force said in a statement.
“A Latin male suspect driving this suspect vehicle pulled alongside the victim, yelled a number of slurs regarding her gender identity and shot at the victim, striking her multiple times in the chest and arm.
“The suspect vehicle is described as a late model four-door, red Chevrolet truck with large aftermarket rims.”
It follows a string of killings of transgender women in the Texan city. In June, after the body of Chynal Lindsey was pulled from a lake, Dallas Police said they were investigating three similar deaths dating back to 2017.
One victim, Muhlaysia Booker, was shot dead in May, a month after video footage emerged showing her being brutally beaten in a separate attack.
A 33-year-old man has been charged with Ms Booker’s murder and two other deaths and a 22-year-old man has been charged with Ms Lindseys murder.
At least 17 transgender women have been killed across the whole of the US so far this year. Earlier this month Indya Moore, the star of Golden Globe-winning drama Pose,paid tribute to their lives with a pair of bespoke earrings.
Crime Stoppers are offering up to $5,000 for information relating to the latest attack in Dallas.
