Transgender student feels forced to pay to have both breasts removed after being on waiting list for four years

Having been on an NHS waiting list for four years, Tyler Norley can’t wait any longer to have surgery.

The student is trying to get together enough funds to cover the cost of ‘top surgery’ - an operation to have both breasts removed.

The 17-year-old was was diagnosed with gender dysphoria at the age of 11.

Tyler, who lives in the Whitehall area of Bristol, said: "The impact of not having the body you want to have is hard and everyday it gets worse.

"I’ve tried the NHS but the waiting lists are ridiculous."

The young man said he wasn't able to wear a binder because his breathing is really bad and his chest is too big to bind.

He hasn't been able to start testosterone either, due to him not being seen at an adult clinic.

Tyler - who has set up a gofundme page to help him cover the costs for the surgery - said: "Having the surgery would be a massive day for me, to live in the body I’ve always wanted to be in could save my life.

"The usual cost of top surgery varies on the person and recovery is the tough part but it’ll be worth it."

Tyler said he is not bothered about having scars, adding the chest operation scars would be something to be proud of.

He is currently not able to work due to his mental health issues and is receiving home tutoring.

The student said he had been diagnosed with autism, depression, anxiety and PTSD, as well as being treated for borderline personality disorder.

"I knew since I was little I wanted to be a boy but found out what the term transgender meant when I was 10," he added. "Being trans in Bristol is difficult only because some people don’t understand it but you’ll find that anywhere.

"My mental health has been tough for a very long time due to me not being in the body or gender I want to be.

"I can't cope with it, but some days are better than others.

"I wish someday they find something that helps."
