Transforming classrooms in Japan for students' sake

OYAMA, Tochigi -- While some schools in this city remain closed to prevent infections with the novel coronavirus, some have been taking various measures on the way toward fully reopening classes.

Kinu Compulsory Education School, which provides instruction from elementary school through junior high school, began letting students come to the school in separate groups on May 15.

On Monday, 124 students came to school, accounting for about half the students usually there.

Teachers and other staff manually attached transparent barriers to all students' desks to prevent airborne droplets from spreading. On all sides of each student, distance is maintained by empty seats.

"Prioritizing safety and the sense of security for our students, we want to brace ourselves to deal with the situation," said principal Yoshiyuki Kurai. The school is scheduled to fully reopen classes starting June 1.
