Transformation of Bell's Sports Centre in Perth deemed a great success

Councillors have been told the launch of the new state-of-the-art gym facilities at Perth's Bell's Sports Centre has been a "great success".

Live Active Leisure's chief executive was asked to provide an update to councillors at a meeting this week.

Chief executive Paul Cromwell told Perth and Kinross Council' s Scrutiny and Performance Committee over 910 seven-day passes had been issued within the first month of the new gym's launch.

He made the remarks following questioning from former Craigie Hill golf pro, Frank Smith.

Almond and Earn Conservative councillor Frank Smith asked the Live Active chief executive how the changeover in Bell's from Rodney was going.

The £750,000 project - which drew criticism from many quarters - saw the coaching hall at Bell's Sports Centre in Perth transformed into a "destination gym" and the withdrawal of fitness services from Live Active Rodney. The Dundee Road centre's future remains undecided.

At Wednesday's meeting Cllr Smith said: "I was very very impressed with it and I just hope it's really going to succeed."

Mr Cromwell responded: "In terms of Bell's it's been a great success as the launch of the new facilities."

The state-of-the-art 100+ station gym - in what was the coaching hall at Bell's - opened to the public in July. As well as the gym Bell's has three new fitness studios: the Cycle Studio; the Mind and Body Studio and the Fitness Studio.

Mr Cromwell described the destination fitness gym as an "outstanding facility" with "significant take-up" from young people aged 12-15.

He said the feedback had been "incredibly positive".

The Live Active chief told councillors: "We offered a seven-day pass when we launched the gym and over 910 seven-day passes were issued over a four/five-week period."

Mr Cromwell added: "Summer tends not to be the time when people would go to the fitness gym - for obvious reasons. Now we're actually moving more into the season in September/October and we can only expect it to go from strength to strength."
