Transfer release clause emerges for Leeds United-linked player as Premier League deal close

Matheus Cunha's release clause has reportedly emerged as Atletico Madrid continue to try and offload the Brazilian ahead of next month's transfer window. Leeds United have long been linked with the player, but are not involved in trying to sign him in January despite being linked with a move.

Still without a goal this season in 11 La Liga appearances for Diego Simeone's side, Cunha has been the subject of much interest from a whole host of Premier League teams. It's been reported over the last week that English top division rivals Wolves are in pole position to capture his services but various clubs are still interested in the 23-year-old including Aston Villa, Everton and Arsenal.

According to Goal, Cunha's contract won't run out until 2026 and they state his release clause is expected to be above €100 million (£87m) - far beyond what Leeds are likely to want to spend on him. That figure appears some way off, with reports in the Midlands suggesting a deal for closer to £40m will see Cunha move to Wolves. Either way, it's a figure Leeds wouldn't consider paying for him.

With Spaniard Rodrigo Moreno already firing in the Premier League this season, Whites manager Jesse Marsch will want more firepower up front to give his side the best chance of avoiding relegation for the third straight season, but Leeds won't take a £40m gamble on a player who has struggled for goals this season.
