Transfer merry-go-round that suits Arsenal and works out even better for Liverpool

It wouldn't be deadline day without a transfer merry-go-round on the cards.

They're very rarely pulled off as it takes too many things going right in a single day to make all the deals possible. But they certainly get people talking.

This January's transfer merry-go-round involves both Arsenal and Liverpool and sees the Gunners potentially offload some deadwood and the Reds make a new signing.

Liverpool are in the market for a new centre-back, and were previously linked with Gunners defender Shkodran Mustafi.

But the Reds have turned their attention to a whole host of other players including Ben Davies, Duje Caleta-Car, and Ozan Kabak.

The deal for Preston's Davies is pretty much over the line, with the centre-back completing a medical at Kirkby this Monday morning.

Liverpool are still keen to strengthen their defence though, meaning Caleta-Car and Kabak remain linked with the Anfield club.

Marseille are digging their heels in over Caleta-Car as they want to sign a replacement first, and this seems unlikely, suggesting this transfer won't happen.

But the Kabak deal is more likely... and this is where Arsenal come in.

Like Marseille, Schalke want to sign a replacement before agreeing to sell Kabak, and are interested in Arsenal's German defender Mustafi.

The Gunners are keen to sell the centre-back as he is out of favour in north London, and in danger of being frozen out for the remainder of the season.

If Schalke can complete a deal for Mustafi this deadline day, which will be a boost for Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, then the Bundesliga club will give the green light to sell Kabak to Liverpool.

It's a long shot that everything falls into place, but stranger things have happened.
