Transfer gossip: Sturridge deal would need high-level approval and Rondon loan that passed NUFC by

Newcastle United would need Premier League board approval to bring in an extra player for the remainder of the season.

But they would have to prove that their squad had been significantly hampered by serious injuries to get the green light, something that would be unlikely given they currently have enough senior cover and Under-23 back-up players to see the through until May.

United have lost Javier Manquillo and Fabian Schar until the end of the season - but more worryingly will be without Callum Wilson until April.

This resulted in speculation linking them with 31-year-old former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge but while the free agent could sign for Newcastle if they wanted to talk terms, he wouldn't be able to play in the last 14 matches.

The big possible loan deal that Newcastle missed out on in January was former striker Salomon Rondon.

The South American was available until the end of the season but has now signed for CSKA Moscow.

Rondon bagged 12 goals for Newcastle in the 2018/19 campaign before joining Chinese side Dalian Pro, who have now loaned him out to the Russian club.
