Transfer for Manchester United and England player linked with Leeds United given backing

Former Premier League manager and current pundit Tim Sherwood feels that a move away from Old Trafford would be good for English goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

The recently-capped England international has been linked with Leeds United given his history in Yorkshire following loan spells with Sheffield United.

Henderson remains behind David De Gea in the pecking order at Manchester United and would perhaps be afforded more minutes at Elland Road where 20-year-old stopper Illan Meslier is the current No. 1.

That said, Meslier has been in sparkling form recently, making a string of good saves against Arsenal and Everton, prior to defeat against Chelsea.

The young Frenchman is among the youngest goalkeepers ever to have featured in 10 or more Premier League games, which represents just how highly he is rated by Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds.

However, Sherwood has urged 23-year-old Henderson to test himself elsewhere.

"I know the boy wants to play for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, but at his age, you just had a season in the Premier League, you have to play football.

"Get yourself away son and go and play for someone and be their number one.”

Given the seniority of first-team goalkeepers at other Premier League clubs, Leeds may be a smart destination for the England 'keeper.

A return to Sheffield United would be on the cards, if not for their precarious position at the bottom of the Premier League table, which may deter Henderson from returning to Bramall Lane.

If Leeds do intend to move for the youngster and supplement their goalkeeping ranks, it could be a pre-emptive strike if second-choice Kiko Casilla is moved on in January or next summer. The Spaniard is one of Leeds' highest earners and has made just a single EFL Cup appearance for the first team in 2020-21.

Celtic are amongst the interested clubs, according to HITC, meaning Leeds will need to put up a fight if Henderson emerges as a top target.

Leeds face Manchester United at Old Trafford on December 20th, hoping to get one over on their arch rivals and ex-Reds player in the dugout Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
