Transfer demands made as Newcastle United's dream targets become clear

Newcastle United supporters believe upwards of £100 million will have to be spent on improving the Magpies' squad this summer, while voting target James Maddison as their dream target this summer.

Eddie Howe's side will be hoping to continue their upward trajectory in the upcoming campaign after a fantastic season saw them breach the Premier League top four and qualify for the Champions League. And they are hoping to strengthen their squad this summer, with Maddison a well-known target following Leicester City's relegation.

We polled Newcastle United fans in an end-of-season Big Survey, with future transfer plans naturally a big talking point. And of the thousands who voted, a conclusive 91% of fans said that £100m-plus will have to be spent this summer, with £101m-£150m the most common response with 39% of the vote.

The midfield was voted as the biggest priority to strengthen this summer with 65% of the votes for that option, although 26% do feel that Howe's attack needs strengthening also this summer. After an excellent season for Nick Pope, it was no surprise that less than 1% of the vote was for a new goalkeeper.

And as far as dream signings this summer, Maddison topped the list as the conclusion of his international duty with England brings about the freedom for him to now sort his future. Tottenham are also believed to be interested in signing the attack-minded midfielder this summer.

Maddison received 31% of the vote to top the dream targets list for this summer, only just pipping Dominik Szoboszlai who received 29% of the vote. The 22-year-old midfielder has been named as a player of interest to Magpies officials and captains the Hungary national team. He's said to have a £61m release clause in his current RB Leipzig contract.

Chronicle Live understands that Newcastle have been quoted at the higher end of the market on several targets including Maddison and Szoboszlai but are boxing clever and refusing to budge and pay over the odds for their targets.
