Deadline day: Liverpool sign Davies and Kabak, King to Everton – as it happened

Everton sign Joshua King on short-term deal

Just two hours after the deadline, the final transfer of the night is sealed. Perhaps the nifty illustration caused the delay; either way, Josh King is an Everton player, until the end of the season at least.

Takumi Minamino joins Liverpool on loan

Takumi Minamino has joined Southampton from Liverpool on loan until the end of the season, while Shane Long has headed along the south coast to Bournemouth, on loan until the end of the season. Saints applied for a deal sheet and both deals are now complete.

Updated

Rangers have signed Aberdeen forward Scott Wright for a £200,000 fee. Wright had already agreed a summer move, but the clubs agreed a price for the 23-year-old to move six months early.

Here’s Nick Ames on Mikel Arteta’s big clear-out at Arsenal:

Updated

A couple more Championship loans to report: West Brom midfielder Sam Field has joined QPR, while Manchester City winger Patrick Roberts heads off on another loan deal, this time at Derby.

Still awaiting the official announcement from Everton, but here’s our report on the deadline day battle for the two Joshes:

Sky are doing their quirky sizzle reel thing, so we must be almost done. Still waiting on Josh King to Everton, although Anthony Gordon has gone out to Preston on loan, which was key to getting the King deal done. Elsewhere, Southampton are working to tie up a loan move for Takumi Minamino, with Shane Long going on loan to Bournemouth.

Fulham sign forward Josh Maja on loan

Another deadline day, another Fulham deal-sheet special, as Josh Maja arrives on loan from Bordeaux. Scott Parker has also let a couple of attackers go out on loan; Aboubakar Kamara has joined Dijon, with Neeskens Kebano going to Middlesbrough for the rest of the season.

Updated

Ben has all bases covered tonight: he’s just sent me perhaps the weirdest announcement video of the January window...

All go at Bournemouth, who remain hopeful of bringing in Shane Long with Josh King heading to Everton. The defender Jack Simpson, an academy graduate, has signed for Rangers. Earlier, Nnamdi Ofoborh rejoined Wycombe on loan until June.

Another outgoing player at Southampton is Yan Valery - the French full-back has been loaned out to Birmingham City for the rest of the season. Valery, who has lost his place to Kyle Walker-Peters, struggled in the defeat to Arsenal last week and heads on loan in search of regular game time.

Updated

Carlo Ancelotti made it very clear to the Everton hierarchy and Josh King that he was a big admirer of the striker, who was determined to return to the Premier League after being relegated with Bournemouth last season.

After Ancelotti’s thoughts became clear to King, picking Everton over Fulham was a no-brainer. The proposed move, on a contract until the end of the season, also allows the Norway striker to keep his long-term options open. Torino are among the European clubs to have shown an interest.

Southampton also have a deal sheet in for Shane Long’s loan move to Bournemouth, and there’s big news in League One as Will Grigg rejoins MK Dons from Sunderland.

Newcastle sign Arsenal's Joe Willock on loan

And now it’s a done deal. Newcastle’s only signing of the January window, and a great opportunity for Willock, who has impressed in the Europa League, to get more top-flight game time.

Olivier Ntcham has left Celtic to join Marseille on loan, with an option for the Ligue 1 side to buy the midfielder this summer. In other continental news, Manchester City tyro Jayden Braaf is heading to Udinese on loan.

BONG!

The January transfer window has closed. It’s deal sheet time for Fulham, Everton and Southampton (we think), while Joe Willock to Newcastle is reportedly imminent...

West Brom sign Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan

Sam Allardyce is reportedly a very happy man after adding the Arsenal utility man to their January business. He’s brought in midfielder Okay Yokuslu, forward Mbaye Diagne, winger Robert Snodgrass, backup keeper Andy Lonergan and now Maitland-Niles, who is expected to start in midfield.

Southampton remain hopeful of completing a loan deal until the end of the season for Takumi Minamino, having submitted a deal sheet to the Premier League to give them a couple of extra hours to get a deal over the line...

Here’s more from Andy Hunter on Liverpool’s double defensive deal:

King may have struggled this season, but I think that’s a good deal for Everton, who needed more firepower. It seems Fulham will have to settle for a loan move for Josh Maja. He’s a hugely talented player, but it’s a lot to ask for him to adapt quickly enough to keep them in the Premier League.

Josh King has chosen Everton over Fulham. Short-term deal until the end of the season. Could reach £5m with all add-ons achieved.

Updated

Liverpool have signed two centre-backs today, but it’s not all good news, with the club confirming Joël Matip will be out for the rest of the season. With Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk still recovering from injury and Fabinho touch and go, Kazak and Davies might both start against Brighton on Wednesday...

There’s half an hour to go. Here are the key deals we’re waiting for (all loans):

  • Liverpool’s Takumi Minamino to Southampton
  • Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock to Newcastle
  • Bordeaux forward Josh Maja to Fulham
  • Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles to West Brom
  • Joshua King to choose between Everton and Fulham

Tottenham keeper Paulo Gazzaniga has got his loan move to Spain – he has joined Elche until the end of the season. The Argentinian had slipped to third in the pecking order at Tottenham, after the arrival of Joe Hart. José Mourinho will now use 22-year-old Alfie Whiteman as his third choice.

There have been a few loan outgoings today: forward Kazaiah Sterling is off to Morton on loan, and Jack Roles has joined Stevenage. Gedson Fernandes’ underwhelming loan spell at Spurs is over, with Benfica recalling the midfielder and sending him to Galatasaray.

Updated

Fulham are expecting to sign Josh Maja on loan from Bordeaux before the deadline. Tick tock.

As Kabak leaves Schalke, he’s replaced by Shkodran Mustafi, who has signed up after his Arsenal contract was cancelled. Mikel Arteta and Edu have done a nice job reshaping the Gunners squad this month.

More details on Liverpool’s loan signing of Ozan Kabak from Schalke. The Turkey international will cost a £1.5m loan fee and Liverpool have an option to buy for an initial £18m in the summer. So £2m up front for two central defenders on deadline day, given Ben Davies was an initial £500,000 plus £1.1m in bonuses. Not bad at all.

Liverpool seal loan deal for Ozan Kabak

Done deal! Liverpool have completed a loan move for Schalke’s Turkish centre-back, Ozan Kabak.

Harry Redknapp has arrived at Sky HQ looking a little bleary-eyed after his traffic troubles. He’s advising José Mourinho on how to get the best out of Gareth Bale: “Stick him up against someone slow in training.”

“With West Brom signing an Okay [Yokuslu] and Liverpool landing an OK [Ozan Kabak], Big Sam and Normal Jürgen have certainly had an OK day in the transfer window,” writes Peter Oh Kay.

Updated

Ben also informs me that Derby forward Morgan Whittaker has sealed a £700,000 move to promotion chasers Swansea. Wayne Rooney has made loan moves for Man Utd defender Teden Mengi and Stoke forward Lee Gregory, and is hoping to bring in winger Patrick Roberts, too.

Elsewhere in the Championship, it wouldn’t be deadline day without Tom Ince making a move. He joins Luton on loan from Stoke; the Hatters will be the 10th club of his career.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s preference had been to bolster his full-back options but after approaches for Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Japhet Tanganga failed to come to fruition, attention has turned to forward areas, with Theo Walcott expected to be sidelined for at least a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury. Coupled with Bournemouth’s interest in Shane Long, another versatile forward option makes sense. Minamino looks to be that man ...

Takumi Minamino

Southampton make loan move for Minamino

Southampton are in talks to sign Liverpool forward Takumi Minamino on loan. The Japanese midfielder joined Jurgen Klopp’s side from Red Bull Salzburg last January but has been on the periphery this season.

A deal that will see Shane Long join Bournemouth on loan until the end of the season is thought to be close. Josh King, meanwhile, is set for Everton or Fulham, although the former are in the box seat.

“Thanks for keeping us abreast of developments,” says Bill Hargreaves. “On which note: I’ve just driven through Crystal Palace and there’s not a light on in the place.” I’m down the road in Croydon, and can confirm it’s all quiet on the transfer front.

Jonjoe Kenny joins Celtic on loan from Everton

Jonjoe Kenny has completed his loan move from Everton to Celtic. The right-back, who spent last season on loan at Schalke, has made only eight appearances for his boyhood club this term and needs regular game time. Celtic were in need of a new right-back after Jérémie Frimpong moved to Bayer Leverkusen earlier this month.

What’s the latest on Ozan Kabak, I hear you ask? Well, Sky Germany are saying the deal is done, but no official word yet. Liverpool have sealed a deal for Preston’s Ben Davies; here are Jürgen Klopp’s thoughts:

“What I like about Ben is it just shows that each situation creates opportunities. I think it’s probably clear that in a normal transfer window, without any issues, we would not look at Preston. It’s not really likely. But since we saw him and since our situation got clearer, when we saw him we got really excited about it.

“He’s a boy who played his whole life for Preston, is around the corner pretty much. We see [his] quality and we see the potential as well because he’s 25 and there’s a lot to come for him. I love a lot about his play. He’s a really good footballer, looks like a proper leader in this Preston team.”

Sky reporting that Harry Redknapp, who was supposed to be joining them in the studio, is held up in traffic on the way to Isleworth. “Heston services, what’s he still doing there?!”

Bournemouth have accepted bids from Fulham and Everton for Joshua King. It’s now likely to be up to the player where he ends up. The Cherries have moved to sign Shane Long on loan from Southampton, in the likely event King departs tonight.

Bournemouth were initially reluctant to sell King, a player they rejected a £25m bid from Manchester United for 12 months ago and then a £13m bid from West Ham last summer. After a fruitless goalscoring return this season, they are now keen to cash in with the striker’s contract expiring in June.

Preston have signed young Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg on loan, as part of the deal taking Ben Davies to Anfield.

A reminder that you can catch up with all today’s deals from around Europe here:

“Palace fans, you can go to bed,” says Michael Bridge on Sky. It’s only 8.20pm! It does look like Palace have held off interest in Christian Benteke (West Brom) and Patrick van Aanholt (Arsenal), and Wilfried Zaha is still at Selhurst Park.

So, potentially bad news for Fulham fans on Josh King, and Jacob Steinberg reports there is no guarantee their backup Josh, Bordeaux forward Josh Maja, will arrive either. I fear another batch of deal sheets at Craven Cottage tonight...

Ben Fisher has an update from Bournemouth’s perspective, and it’s more good news for Everton:

Everton have tabled an offer for Josh King, rivalling Fulham’s earlier bid. Bournemouth are open to selling for the right price but are yet to accept an offer. The forward is understood to favour a move to Everton, but a deal sheet may be required.

Updated

Everton first in line for King

Everton are now favourites to sign Josh King from Bournemouth having cleared several players off their wage bill today in order to strengthen up front. Anthony Gordon has joined Preston on loan and with Jonjoe Kenny set for Celtic, Cenk Tosun returning to Besiktas on loan plus Jonas Lossl joining Midtjylland, the club has trimmed the wage bill sufficiently to table an offer for the Norway international.

Arsenal are still ploughing through the logistics that would allow Ainsley Maitland-Niles to join West Brom on loan, Joe Willock to make a similar move to Newcastle and Shkodran Mustafi to leave for Schalke. At this point no problems are anticipated and it’s just a matter of when these deals can be finalised. As a reminder, there’ll be no incomings tonight.

Liverpool sign Preston defender Ben Davies

Now it’s official: Liverpool have signed centre-back Ben Davies from Preston. He will cost them £500,000 up front, with another £1.5m or so in structured add-ons.

“I’m obviously delighted to be here. It’s a huge opportunity,” Davies said of his surprise move. “Obviously it came as a bit of a surprise when it first came but the opportunity that is in front of me is incredible. I’d be silly to not make the most of it.

“I’ve never actually been to Anfield and I haven’t actually walked out of the tunnel yet, so I’m looking forward to that,” the 25-year-old added. “Just to be in this kind of atmosphere is brilliant.”

Deadline day: deals yet to be done

With three hours to go, here are some of the Premier League deals we’re waiting on:

  • Liverpool are in talks to sign Schalke defender Ozan Kabak
  • West Brom move for Maitland-Niles, Joe Willock to Newcastle
  • Fulham and Everton are battling to sign forward Joshua King

An email from Brian Hudner: “Further to Niall Mullen’s riff on Eze coming up against his fellow palindrome Kabak (18.31), Fulham match programme compilers must have done a double-take in 2004 when, having seen John Collins leave at the end of the previous season, Collins John was promptly added to the squad.”

Sky are reporting that Everton may be trying to muscle in on Fulham’s move for Bournemouth forward Josh King. Carlo Ancelotti could use some extra firepower, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin having gone off the boil. Fulham are also looking at a loan move for Josh Maja - the Cottagers taking it to the wire on deadline day, as is tradition.

Preston have signed Stoke centre-back Liam Lindsay, a sign that Ben Davies’ move to Liverpool is complete. In fact, North End’s statement initially said as much - before it was hastily amended.

Dele Alli isn’t going anywhere today, and his Twitter likes make for interesting reading. Will he get his apparent wish for more game time at Spurs under José Mourinho?

Thanks, Luke. A couple of interesting moves went through just before the Bundesliga window closed. Bayern striker Joshua Zirkzee has joined Parma on loan, with Sami Khedira joining Hertha Berlin from Juventus on a free. Italy’s window shuts in half an hour, with France and Spain closing at 11pm GMT.

And that will be all from me. Sources are saying that some pesky Premier League club is making a late bid to hijack West Brom’s loan move for Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Arsenal, so there may be drama ahead. Niall will be here to take you through it all. Bye!

Regarding the arrival of Moisés Caicedo, the Brighton manager Graham Potter has been reflecting on why they signed him and how it fits with the club’s long-term plan:

“For us to be competitive longer term, we have to have that ability to sign players that haven’t necessarily reached their potential and we’ve got to help them get there,” Potter said. That’s how we’ll grow as a football club. That’s exciting. It’s not easy to do, you’re not buying the sure thing, you’ve got to do a lot of work to take a young person from the other side of the world and expect everything to go smoothly - it’s not the reality and a lot of work has to go in. That’s what we’re prepared to do and we will do our best.”

“The plan is for him to acclimatise and settle in here with us,” added Potter. “It wouldn’t be fair for me to put any real expectations on him for the next couple of months. The main thing is to settle in and adapt. He’s not coming in to fix any problems for us as the first thing, that’s for sure. He’s here to settle in and get to know us, we get to know him, so the expectations are just that really.”

Ben Davies to Liverpool done?

Liverpool have taken a step towards solving their centre-back problems by completing the signing of Ben Davies from Preston, report PA. The 25-year-old had a medical on Monday before signing for an initial fee believed to be in the region of £500,000, plus structured add-ons.

Newcastle and Arsenal are understood to have finalised a loan deal for Joe Willock, and the midfielder is believed to be on his way to Tyneside to complete formalities.

Meanwhile, Steve Bruce’s hopes of borrowing Hamza Chowdhury from Leicester seem to be fading fast - but DeAndre Yedlin has completed his free transfer to Galatasaray following two days of intense discussions and a medical in Istanbul.

Sam has emailed in with some perceptive (and perhaps controversial) thoughts on this season’s Premier League relegation battle. Is it, in fact, even still a battle? Read on:

“I think it’s worth observing that, considering how much this season has given us so far, we essentially already know who’s going down at the halfway point. Like Hull/Middlesbrough/Sunderland in 2017, there probably isn’t going to be much of a relegation dogfight this year.

“Sheffield United are, like Sunderland, gunning for a record failure (although they’re still a much better side than Moyes’s Black Cats). There’s been poor recruitment at Bramall Lane - nothing to rival the likes of Papy Djilobodji though - with only Jayden Bogle actually being an upgrade on last year’s squad.

“West Brom are Hull: having sacked their manager (though the Baggies were too quick, and the Tigers waited too long), a new coach is gearing up for an unlikely survival attempt by cobbling together a new team from loanees and from the southeastern Mediterreanean. True, Marco Silva and Sam Allardyce couldn’t be more different as coaches, but then there’s Jake Livermore (who left Hull for West Brom in January 2017) and Robert Snodgrass (who left Hull in January 2017 and has just joined West Brom) to provide the similarities.

“Fulham, then, are Middlesbrough: on paper, the team best-placed to survive, even though we know they won’t. There’s several players who are clearly better than their league position (Areola/Valdes, Anguissa/de Roon, Mitrovic/Negredo, Loftus-Cheek/Stuani, Lookman/Adama Traore) - yet the team literally cannot score for the life of them.

“Only with Fulham, it’s more pronounced than this. You can tell that they are good enough to genuinely have a chance if only they had a decent No 9 who performed. Literally all they need is a proper attacking focal point; Mitrovic hasn’t delivered and Ivan Cavaleiro isn’t a striker. With a goalscorer, they could genuinely overhaul either Brighton or Newcastle, but Tony Khan seems weirdly reluctant to spend - when they actually have a chance here. I don’t think Josh Maja is the answer, and Josh King is more of a supporting striker. All Fulham need is someone like Mbaye Diagne. It must be especially frustrating for Fulham fans - theirs is a side with so much potential.”

Agree on the form Fulham have showed, they have been displaying increasingly encouraging signs of late. They have a chance.

Sounds like Fulham are optimistic about their chances of landing Josh King tonight. That would be a great signing.

So no agreement just yet over Josh King, but hold on a second ...

More news courtesy of PA right here:

Bolton have signed Danish goalkeeper Lukas Jensen on loan from Burnley until the end of the season. Jensen, 21, has yet to make a first-team appearance for Burnley but featured on the bench three times in the Premier League last season. The Bolton manager Ian Evatt told the club’s official website: “Burnley kindly let us have a look at him last week and the way he came in and led the team, was dominant with his voice, profile and performance, really impressed me. He’s 6ft 7in and is very athletic for a big guy. He will challenge Matt (Gilks) for the No 1 spot for the remainder of the season and I’m delighted that he’s with us.”

The logistics of Gedson Fernandes’s move to Galatasaray were complicated by the midfielder recently returning a positive Covid-19 test. More Turkey-based news for you now - Gedson Fernandes has swapped a loan at Tottenham for a loan at Galatasaray, as confirmed by the club’s very own Twitter page.

News from the Championship, from PA:

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth was delighted to convince Bournemouth midfielder Nnamdi Ofoborh to return to Adams Park on loan for the rest of the season. The 21-year-old played a key role in the Chairboys promotion to the Championship with 25 appearances during the 2019-20 campaign. Ofoborh has found chances limited at Bournemouth this term and despite competition for his signature, Wycombe confirmed the loan on transfer deadline day.

Ainsworth said: “We know what Nnamdi is all about and we’re really pleased to bring him back here. There were a lot of clubs interested in signing him, but Nnamdi enjoyed his time with us last season and knows there’s a great opportunity for him to develop his experience further by coming back and helping us over the second half of the season. He’s got all the attributes to become a top-class central midfielder, as we saw last season with his ability at both ends of the pitch, and I know he can also fill in in defence which could prove to be useful.

That’ll do from me for now – I’ll hand you back to the capable hands of Luke McLaughlin ...

“My mate signed Kabak on Football Manager for Leamington Spa when he got them to the Premier League, and said he was very good. So there’s that,” writes our very own Richard Preston.

If he can do it on a cold night in Warwickshire ...

Couple of people pointing out that Calum Chambers can offer full-back cover for Arsenal, at least at right-back. That is true. Chambers is another one who really needs games actually, after his injury, but is some way down the pecking order. Some of us wondered earlier whether he could be among the day’s loanees but not hearing anything along those lines just now.

A big-name signing for the Bundesliga’s 15th-placed club!

Fulham are trying to do a late deal for the Bournemouth striker Joshua King, who has also been on the list of Everton, Southampton and West Brom this window. West Ham had a £13m bid rejected in the last window and Bournemouth may well regret having turned that down given the striker’s return since. Fulham are in talks over a permanent deal for the striker, who is yet to score a league goal this season. The Norway striker is out of contract in June and is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a European club. Torino are keen but King is keen to stay in the Premier League – if possible.

Admir Pajic writes: “I’m shocked Arsenal haven’t signed a deputy left-back. Either Van Aanholt or Bertrand would fit the bill given both are ex-Chelsea players over 30. Speaking of which, any chance for a Diego Costa-Jose Mourinho reunion?”

Just imagine! Spurs could have done with a fired up Diego Costa last night.

More Kabak details from Ed. I must admit I ... don’t know a lot about him! Kabak, I mean, not Ed. Ed and I shared an apartment in Cairo a couple of summers ago so I have a certain level of insight there. But if you can tell me how good Kabak is, please write or tweet in!

Chris Lord writes in: “I agree with your point that Maitland-Niles to West Brom is good deal for all parties to a certain extent, but am worried it leaves Arsenal slightly light on full-backs. For example if Tierney is still injured tomorrow then we have Bellerin and Cedric but no one else to rotate. What do you think?”

I agree with this and think, in a perfect world, they’d have got a left-back in. It just wasn’t doable today and that became clear pretty early. Tierney gets through so much work in a game and there is definitely a need to manage his fitness. Saka can drop back there as we’ve seen before, although that potentially causes an issue higher up the pitch unless the likes of Willian, Pepe and Martinelli find consistent form. It’s a tough one; they’ll muddle through til summer and be OK, I think.

Ipswich midfielder Brett McGavin has joined Ayr United on loan. Look, the good stuff is still to be rubber-stamped. Under six hours til the deadline ...

The new Football Weekly is here for you!

Liverpool are close to completing the loan signing of Ozan Kabak from Schalke. The Premier League champions will pay a £1m loan fee plus £500,000 depending on appearances, and have an option to make the deal permanent for an initial £18m in the summer. Former Schalke head coach David Wagner, a close friend of Klopp, and the club’s former sporting director Christian Heidel, who worked with Klopp at Mainz, have both recommended the Turkey international to the Liverpool manager.

Commitment to the Latics from the flying winger.

Doesn’t look like Arsenal’s interest in Crystal Palace left-back Patrick van Aanholt will come to anything today. However Van Aanholt is out of contract in the summer – he has plenty of time to negotiate a pre-contract with a foreign club if he sees his future away from Palace.

Dunno who that Nick guy was. Anyway, makes a big difference from the Thomas Partey fanfare Arsenal saw last time out.

Any Arsenal fans still holding out hope of a deadline day signing can down tools. That won’t be happening – there had been interest in signing a deputy left-back but I understand a last-ditch move was never seriously on the cards. Any play for Patrick van Aanholt, or someone similar, will have to wait til the summer.

So nothing doing regarding arrivals, but there is a good chance we will see Willock, Maitland-Niles and Mustafi complete their exits to Newcastle, West Brom and Schalke (the former two on loan, the latter permanent) in the coming hours. It’s been quite the winter clearout by Mikel Arteta.

And of course, Schalke getting their man means Liverpool close in on theirs. Here’s Fab:

Press Association reporting that West Brom are indeed back in for Maitland-Niles! That’d be a good move for both parties, and the player would hopefully get games in his preferred midfield position.

“Surely Bryan Reynolds invested in Brexham and started in Breadpool,” points out Dan C.

This bulletin from Germany suggests Schalke have their man.

Frank Nouble has rejoined Colchester on loan from Plymouth in what I make the 19th transfer of his career. Not bad going at 29.

Loved him in Deadpool / thought he’d gone to Wrexham etc etc etc.

“Hopefully the transfer of Ozan Kabak turns out to be a delight and doesn’t involve a Midnight Express,” jests Gary Byrne of the Turkey international.

DONE DEAL! Moisés Caicedo signs for Brighton

Caicedo IN at Brighton -

Caicedo is very highly rated. Props to Jacob for reporting this back on 9 January.

Fulham have been lovely to watch in recent weeks. Scott Parker has got them playing so well with and without the ball after a shaky start to the season. Their undoing, though, is a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal - just look at how they threw the win away despite dominating West Brom on Saturday.

Parker desperately needs additional firepower (Mitrovic has been ineffective) but, as you can see from today’s inaction across the board, it’s not been easy. Still, the west Londoners are hopeful of getting one over the line: Bordeaux striker Josh Maja, formerly of Sunderland, on loan until the end of the season.

Josh Maja could be the answer to Fulham fans’ prayers.

“Surely all Liverpool need is the guarantee that a new defender won’t get injured if they bump into a door, let alone the new VVD,” says Graeme Neill, which seems a fair call.

We’ve brought you all the key deals in the women’s game too:

“I wonder how Kabak’s agent is spinning his client’s defensive abilities,” wonders Peter Oh. “The new Van Dijk? The next Fabinho? The Turkish Jordan Henderson?”

Good move for Blackburn and for the highly-rated defender.

Arsenal-wise, on top of that likely Willock move it seems as if we’re waiting on whether Ainsley Maitland-Niles completes a loan to Leicester now that Saints is off – or whether West Brom come back into the running. All quiet on any departure for Reiss Nelson so far today. He has made two substitute appearances in the league so far this season so surely needs something ...

Here’s the full story from Ed Aarons on Man City’s move for Kwadwo Baah:

Steve Bruce remains increasingly hopeful of signing Joe Willock on loan from Arsenal. The 21-year-old midfielder could yet be joined by Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury but that loan deal seems in the balance.

Meanwhile a third midfielder – Newcastle’s Matt Ritchie – will not be returning to Bournemouth after all. Jason Tindall confirmed he had seen a second bid for Ritchie rejected and accepted the pursuit was “over.”

DeAndre Yedlin is one Newcastle player most definitely on the move though. The right wing-back is in Istanbul where he has passed a medical at Galatasaray ahead of a fresh start in Turkey. Bruce describes the United States international as “a good lad” but “a wing-back who is not so suited to the back four we want to play.”

Meanwhile Joelinton’s ill advised decision to post a selfie of his recent illicit cut and colour at a Newcastle hair stylist’s salon has not merely landed his hairdresser – who has admitted doing the same for several Newcastle players during lockdown – in seriously hot water but attracted the attention of both Northumbria Police and Newcastle City Council.

While the local force and the council investigate, Bruce is expected to fine the £40m Brazilian striker two weeks’ wages. Talk about an expensive haircut. Even worse, Joelinton’s team-mates are bound to be furious they can no longer get their roots done – and, when it comes to personal grooming, some of these players are arguably higher maintenance than their wives and girlfriends.

There’s room for a chuckle at Newcastle now they’re back to winning ways:

This afternoon’s update from the Get French Football News transfers team:

  • Olivier Ntcham is currently on a flight from Glasgow to Marseille Provence Airport after Celtic accepted a loan with ~ €5m option to buy offer from Marseille for the 24-year-old. He will replace Morgan Sanson in the squad.
  • Fulham defender Maxime Le Marchand is in advanced talks to join Royal Antwerp on loan, according to L’Équipe – Fulham and Bordeaux are also trying to work out a loan for Josh Maja, but the deal is complicated by the number of players that the Premier League side already has in their current squad.
  • Birmingham City have today been in talks with Southampton over the possible loan of 21-year-old right-back Yan Valery.
  • Finally, one for the Arsenal fans – one of the more wholesome moves of the day could be about to come to fruition in Ligue 2. The 28-year-old Yaya Sanogo is in advanced talks with the club where it all started for him, Auxerre, over a short-term contract, according to France Bleu. The former French youth international is a free agent.

Surely we’re not in for a super red-hot done deal, right out of the blue? Hold onto your hats ...

Rochdale may be losing Baah soon, but they’ve confirmed one addition – Conor Shaughnessy has joined from Leeds.

Full story from David Hytner on Dele Alli – who will now be staying at Spurs:

Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Rochdale’s Kwadwo Baah at the end of the season. The forward, who turned 18 last week, has excelled for Brian Barry-Murphy’s side in League One this season having scored three times and attracted interest from Rangers, among others.

But having turned down the opportunity to join City’s academy when he was 16, the former Crystal Palace youth player will now join Pep Guardiola’s squad when his contract expires in the summer after an agreement was reached on Monday. He is expected to be loaned out next season, most likely to a Championship club.

Mood Razak has had similar experiences with Quincy Promes:

“He was also almost a good player in my Spurs FIFA20 team, too (yup, ditched them for ODG at least until Maureen leaves, which may be soon). Promes would get low two figures goals, but impressive in beating opponents with the ball.”

Something Gareth Bale didn’t do much of last night.

This is pretty much the biggest show in transfer town at the moment (Kabak/Mustafi ... though Fabrizio is up there too, come to think of it):

Shkodran Mustafi’s move to Schalke, on a permanent deal for a low fee, is getting closer. He’ll join Sead Kolasinac, who is on loan, in Gelsenkirchen when that is confirmed. Can they help Christian Gross pull off a great escape?

Sounds as if the Dutch winger Quincy Promes is rejoining Spartak Moscow from Ajax. I’ve always liked watching Promes – he’s kind of *almost* been a really top player.

I know you wouldn’t, but don’t forget to feast your eyes on all the deals from Europe’s major leagues:

As trailed by Dave Hytner earlier:

Ipswich’s existing centre-forwards will see their feathers ruffled by this.

It’s mainly loans, odds, sods and Football League transfers, isn’t it? Such a strange, unpredictable, fraught season means many top clubs would rather (or simply have to) keep their powder dry til summer.

Thank you most kindly, Luke. Not exactly a belter so far, is it, but stuff will happen. I was nigh on *promised* that by Arteta a full five hours ago. By all means email or tweet me with any bits and bobs. It’s another day to work through together.

I will now hand over to my esteemed colleague Nick Ames.

The headline? The defender Ozan Kabak is having a medical ahead of a move to Liverpool from Schalke, a deal which appears to hinge on Arsenal sending Shkodran Mustafi to the Bundesliga’s basement boys to fill the resulting vacancy in their defence.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta of Arsenal and Steve Bruce of Newcastle have both said they expect things to happen later today.

“The lad at Schalke, he cannot believe his luck. His agent should be knighted. I don’t know why they’ve signed him. I just think it’s about bringing bodies in, a couple more injuries, and they haven’t got anyone to play centre-half,” opines pundit Paul Merson on Sky. Bye for now.

In the current absence of any DONE DEAL social media posts, with smiling players giving the thumbs-up, or signing on the dotted line alongside a beaming manager, here is a tribute to the outgoing Glenn Murray, who as we know is being released by Brighton & Hove Albion and joining Nottingham Forest. He was on loan at Watford, just to make things confusing.

Updated

Liverpool’s interest in Ozan Kabak is for a loan with an option to make the deal permanent in the summer, but not an obligation to buy. The deal is progressing as Liverpool hope with Shkodran Mustafi’s move from Arsenal to Schalke looking likely and giving the Bundesliga club the replacement they require before sanctioning Kabak’s departure.

The Newcastle manager, Steve Bruce, talks: “There hasn’t been a big transfer [across the Premier League] so far, and I can’t see there being one, if I’m brutally honest ... I know that might ruin your programme. Neymar was the one we were looking at, but that didn’t quite happen [he’s joking, of course ...]

“Matt [Ritchie] has found himself a bit frustrated, not being in the team, and I understand that totally, but if a move doesn’t happen, he needs to get his head down and work until the end of the season.

“We’ve got one or two things bubbling along and we’ll see what happens later today.”

Also from PA, a transfer story of sorts:

Paul Clement has been dismissed by Belgian Pro League strugglers Cercle Brugge. The former Derby, Swansea and Reading boss had been appointed on a three-year contract in July last year. However, Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at Sint-Truiden left his side with just one win in 13 matches and second from bottom of the table.

Courtesy of the PA wire, some quotes from Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta on potential activity later today:

“At least when you know what you want to do and what you want to achieve it is easier,” Arteta said. “Hopefully we won’t have any bad surprises and we can control what we want to do. We are discussing things with some players and some clubs and if we make anything before the deadline it is because we think it is the right thing for their development.”

Tantalising stuff. They have certainly off-loaded enough players to splash some cash in the next 10 hours or so, you would have thought.

Updated

A little more from Solskjær’s press conference: “We’ve made decisions we feel have been good for us and good for individuals for us as well,” he says of the transfer window activity so far. “Our group is a tight-knit group, we don’t have many players in excess. Hopefully Jesse [Lingard] can get going and play at West Ham.”

“We should focus on ourselves, take each game as it comes, and don’t worry about any title ... we’ve been improving.”

Updated

Ole Gunnar Solskjær speaks: “I can confirm there won’t be anyone coming in [today], so don’t stay up late.”

The manager will, however, have a ‘new’ addition to his Premier League squad: “Phil [Jones] has been recovering from a knee injury, an operation he had, he will be included on the list and hopefully he’ll get his fitness back sooner rather than later and be available to play.”

More on Southampton: One alternative to Ainsley Maitland-Niles is Tottenham’s Japhet Tanganga but, as with their previous interest in Maitland-Niles, they are not the only ones sniffing around. West Brom are also keen on the defender.

Updated

Sergio Ramos, Real Madrid’s panto villain centre-back, is a name being bandied around a bit today and he has been linked with Manchester United. The Spain international has apparently declined to sign a new deal in Madrid - although as Jamie Jackson mentioned earlier, no major signings are expected at Old Trafford before the slamming-shut of the window tonight. Ole Gunnar Solskjær has just been speaking so we’ll have any relevant updates soon.

Updated

Stephen Carr emails: “Afternoon Luke. Such a shame that travel restrictions have put paid to the usual barrage of “just seen insert player name here at airport X” tweets.”

Very much so, Stephen. Sky Sports News have already dubbed this ‘the greenest transfer deadline day ever’ and I suppose that’s sort of true, although only by the standards of the past few years. The carbon emissions are significantly down, and so is the transfer activity.

This was mentioned by my colleagues Jacob Steinberg and Ben earlier, but it seems like a smart move for the new Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel to keep Billy Gilmour on the books instead of sending him out on loan. Before he got injured, Gilmour looked absolutely ready to be a regular starter in the middle of the Blues’ midfield.

Updated

Where will Ainsley Maitland-Niles end up come 11pm? Southampton have pulled out of a loan deal for the Arsenal full-back after growing frustrated with the player’s representatives. Maitland-Niles, who is also a target for Leicester and West Brom, was understood to be dallying over a move to St Mary’s, leading Saints to look elsewhere. Full-back cover for Ryan Bertrand and Kyle Walker-Peters is a priority and versatility is king for Ralph Hasenhüttl, whose squad is already down to bare bones. For Arsenal, sending Maitland-Niles to Leicester, a top-four rival, could be considered an own goal.

Updated

“I might be late to the party on this one ...” emails Darrien Bold “... but my Finch Farm sources tell me that Everton are seeking to solve the problem of their ponderous midfield with a deadline-day swoop on Premier League rivals Tottenham for Vinny Samways.”

With Tottenham up there and challenging for the Premier League title? I find that very hard to believe, Darrien.

A permanent move for Marcos Rojo to Boca Juniors from Manchester United looks to be on - but as Argentina’s transfer deadline is later this month, it may not occur for next few days.

News from north of the border: PA reports - as Ben also mentioned earlier - that Celtic have been tipped to complete a loan move for Everton right-back Jonjoe Kenny after appearing to lose out to Liverpool for Ben Davies.

Unless something unexpected occurs - which it can, of course, on deadline day - there will be no major signings by Manchester City and Manchester United.

Jayden Braaf, City’s 18-year-old winger, looks set to be loaned to Udinese while Manchester United’s Teden Mengi will go on loan to Derby.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær is going to speak to the media at 1pm, so we may glean a little more about Man United then ...

Thank you Nick for the further Arsenal update. So if that happened, that would be Sead Kolasinac and Shkrodan Mustafi heading for Schalke in the space of a month, just days after Sokratis’s contract was cancelled and Mesut Özil swanned off to Fenerbahce.

Truly a changing of the guard at Arsenal, overseen by Edu and Mikel Arteta, but who will be left to complain about?

Hearing from a couple of places that Shkodran Mustafi may end up at Schalke 04 by this evening. It’s all part of the merry-go-round: Schalke would need a replacement for Ozan Kabak if Liverpool end up closing that move out. Arsenal would definitely be keen to get a deal done for Mustafi.

Reports that Brighton are confident of signing the 19-year-old Ecuadorian midfielder Moisés Caicedo, from Independiente del Valle, before the window slams shut tonight. We will keep an eye on that one.

Caicedo has already got four appearances for Ecuador’s national team in the bag, scoring one goal. His debut was against Argentina in a World Cup qualifer in October, a 1-0 defeat, and he scored in a 4-2 win against Uruguay later in the month, so it’s fair to say he has already played a decent level.

Just in: It seems Taylor Harwood-Bellis has wrapped up a loan move from Manchester City to Blackburn Rovers until the end of the season. He’s trained with Blackburn today, say Sky Sports News, even if official confirmation of the loan deal is yet to appear on t’internet.

Who is Ben Davies, asks the Press Association, ahead of his move to Liverpool to shore up the Premier League champions’ central defence?

“Davies, born in Barrow-in-Furness in 1995, was spotted playing for Furness Rovers aged 11 and was signed up for Preston’s youth system, through which he progressed to eventually captain their academy team.”

“Davies’ move to Anfield will require a step up in his social media game,” adds the PA story. They have clearly been trawling the archives of his social presence: “The defender has made just 93 Instagram posts in just over six years and 110 Tweets in nine years. Meeting former England cricketer-turned-TV celebrity Andrew Flintoff after a 2015 pre-season friendly at Ashington appears to be a highlight.”

If I could do a sideways-glance at the camera à la Eddie Murphy in Trading Places right now, believe me, I would do it.

Updated

This just in: An ‘unnamed Premier League club’ apparently offered former Chelsea bully-boy striker Diego Costa a loan deal until the end of the season. But, apparently, he’s not interested because he wants a longer deal. So that’s the end of that one, it would seem.

Meanwhile, Ozan Kabak of Schalke has been spotted arriving at their training complex, fuelling speculation that he may be about to have a medical ahead of a rumoured move to former Premier League crisis-club Liverpool.

“As for your little programme on the telly where you’re counting down … just go and get a job. Get a life. It’s just not very good, is it?”

Who said that about the transfer window? Find out in this angry manager rant’s quiz. Naturally we reject such scepticism on this blog and are very excited about the afternoon and evening ahead.

Thank you Ben for the sterling work so far today - I’ll be here until 2pm, then back at 6pm, with Nick Ames taking the reins 2pm-6pm. My favourite rumour of the day so far is Patrick van Aanholt to Arsenal. A fantastic player, no doubt, but someone who would possibly find his enthusiasm for defending questioned on Arsenal Fan TV?

A little movement regarding Arsenal loans. They are in talks with Newcastle to send Joe Willock there before tonight’s deadline; that one is ongoing but the signs are looking good. Willock needs a run of games somewhere and to shake off the “Europa League specialist” tag he’s assumed. I get the sense Arsenal do not expect today’s business – there will be more – to be wrapped up especially early ...

Eleven hours to go klaxon! My colleague Luke McLaughlin will steer you through the choppy waters of this afternoon but, before then, a recap of deadline day so far:

Liverpool are wrapping up a £2m deal for Preston’s Ben Davies and are ramping up interest in Schalke centre-back Ozan Kabak

Southampton remain hopeful of signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles, but face competition from Leicester and West Brom

Dele Alli looks set to stay at Tottenham amid PSG interest

Newcastle reject Bournemouth’s bid to re-sign Matt Ritchie

Bergkamp signs for Watford ... Mitchel, son of former Arsenal legend Dennis, has joined the club’s Under-23s

Updated

Southampton’s Yan Valery has agreed to move on loan to Birmingham ... which would suggest Saints are optimistic of beating Leicester and West Brom to the loan signing of Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles. At the start of the day Southampton were hopeful of doing a deal for Maitland-Niles. Certainly one to watch.

Essential lunchtime reading, courtesy of Paul MacInnes:

Danny Rose – remember him? The 30-year-old left-back has been in the deep freeze at Tottenham, having not even been given a squad number. His football this season has been a pair of appearances for the club’s under-23 team in November. Rose will be out of contract in June but the club do not expect him to be on the move today, raising the prospect of a damaging stand-off being prolonged.

Newcastle have rejected Bournemouth’s bid to take Matt Ritchie back and made it clear Ritchie will not be going anywhere this window. That is a blow to manager Jason Tindall, who was keen to reunite with the winger. As for Joshua King leaving for Southampton, that one seems unlikely at this stage. Burnley and West Brom have also been credited with an interest.

Updated

Who wants to hear more about Winston Reid joining Brentford? The lesser-spotted 32-year-old has joined the Championship club on loan until the end of the season from West Ham. “We felt we needed to bring an extra centre back in,” says head coach Thomas Frank after landing the New Zealand international. “Pontus Jansson will be out for at least six weeks and Luka Racic came back from his loan at Northampton Town with a back injury.”

Done deal! Wolves have allowed Burton to snap up Terry Taylor, who sounds like a tough-tackling veteran midfielder from the 50s. The Wales Under-21 international has signed a two-and-a-half year contract at Burton, becoming the struggling League One club’s seventh signing of the January transfer window. Manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was quick to big him up. “He has big potential and the sky is the limit – whatever he wants to achieve, he will achieve,” Hasselbaink says.

From Real Madrid to Bournemouth, via Middlesbrough ... Bournemouth have confirmed Jonathan Woodgate will work under manager Jason Tindall as a “senior first-team coach”. Tindall has overseen one victory in his past seven Championship matches, including three successive defeats. The 41-year-old former Tottenham defender was identified by Bournemouth as a fresh voice. Woodgate, who was sacked from his first management role by Boro last June, previously spent time at Liverpool in a recruitment role. He replaces Graeme Jones, who held the same role until joining Steve Bruce’s staff at Newcastle last week.

Bit more Spurs news. With Dele Alli set to stay, the focus will be on a few more fringe loans. Troy Parrott will be recalled from Millwall and sent to Ipswich for the remainder of the season and Gedson Fernandes, who has six months to run on his contract, is expected to join Galatasaray. Paulo Gazzaniga could get a loan to Spain.

Done deal klaxon! The Arsenal midfielder Matt Smith has joined Charlton Athletic of League One on loan until the end of the season. The midfielder impressed at Swindon Town in the first half of this season, scoring two goals and recording four assists. “I think he suits the way we play, he’s an energetic midfielder,” says Charlton’s manager, Lee Bowyer. “I like that he looks to play forward every time he receives the ball, he’s going to be another good addition to our squad.”

Steve Bruce has confirmed a nugget of news at Newcastle: the out of favour full-back DeAndre Yedlin is swapping Tyneside for Istanbul, joining Galatasaray on a permanent deal. “Sometimes you have to let one out to bring somebody in so it could be a busy day for us,” the Newcastle manager says, teasingly. Bruce is in for the Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury but has others on his list.

Will Liverpool end the day with sufficient cover for Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joël Matip? Plenty more topics to debate here:

Centre-backs are all the rage at Liverpool. Not only are they putting the finishing touches to a £2m deal for the Preston defender Ben Davies but they have, according to Sky, trained their sights on another: Ozan Kabak of Schalke. Liverpool are reportedly working on paying a loan fee of around £2.5m to sign Kabak until the end of the season with an option to buy the player in the summer. The only thing is, as my esteemed colleague Gregg Bakowski points out, Schalke are bottom of Bundesliga having conceded 49 goals in 19 games. Yikes! Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Marseille’s Duje Ćaleta-Car. All good fun, isn’t it?

Updated

West Ham’s Winston Reid is joining Brentford on loan until the end of the season. The defender has just returned from a loan in MLS side Kansas City and is nowhere near David Moyes’s first team. The 32-year-old, whose West Ham career hit the rocks when he suffered a bad knee injury in February 2018, needs regular football. He was once a key player for West Ham, signing a six-year deal in the summer of 2017. That deal still has two and a half years left on it ...

On Dele Alli, José Mourinho said after Sunday night’s defeat at Brighton that he “always told that I did not have any indication he was leaving.” That is not strictly true. The Tottenham manager was asked repeatedly about Alli’s situation previously January, amid a link to Paris Saint-Germain, and he tended to sidestep the question. I don’t know, it’s not up to me, I don’t want to comment etc ... The change in tone would appear to indicate that Mourinho has accepted he will still have Alli for the coming months and the bigger question for him, really, is whether he is happy about that.

Mourinho has not put his trust in Alli at all this season and he was believed to feel that a loan move would be best for all parties. On the other hand, nobody at Spurs, least of all Mourinho, has wanted to weaken the squad and so there has been pressure (mainly from him) to find a new midfielder before tonight’s deadline. That has been difficult. Christian Eriksen has been available but it always looked like a difficult deal to do.

Bergkamp signs for Watford! ... Mitchel, the son of former Arsenal legend Dennis has joined the Championship club’s Under-23s until the end of the season. Bergkamp Jr spent nine years with Almere City in Holland before moving to England this year. It has been a busy few days at Vicarage Road, with Maurizio Pochettino, son of the Paris Saint-Germain manager, also joining the club’s youth setup. Dan Gosling arriving from Bournemouth, while the goalkeeper Rob Elliot has also signed. Meanwhile they have terminated loan deals for James Garner and Glenn Murray, while Domingos Quina has departed to Granada. Back to Bergkamp ...

When I was younger it was difficult [to be compared all the time] but I’ve adapted to it now. It’s just my name and I’m my own player and hopefully I can leave my own legacy. He’s been amazing to me and for me. He’s my No 1 fan and has always been there for me. It’s a privilege to have him as my dad and to work with him on my game.”

Joshua King could be on the move before the deadline – a swap deal with Shane Long has been floated – but Bournemouth have other irons in the fire. They are keen on bringing Matt Ritchie back to the south coast from Newcastle. Steve Bruce has said Ritchie is “frustrated he’s not playing” and “you can never say never” about a move. In terms of outgoings, Nnamdi Ofoborh, who spent last season on loan at Wycombe, and Jack Simpson, are set to depart before midnight. Simpson is set for a move to Rangers.

A bit of tubthumping Crystal Palace news: goalkeeper Vicente Guaita has signed a contract extension until 2023. The 34-year-old Spaniard joined Palace from Getafe in 2018 and has gone on to register 24 clean sheets in 80 appearances. His new deal comes with the option to extend for a further season. Lovely stuff.

Jonas Lössl has started what could be a bit of a clear-out at Everton today by returning to Danish club FC Midtjylland on a permanent transfer. The 31-year-old goalkeeper, signed from Huddersfield in July 2019, has not featured under Carlo Ancelotti and was way down the pecking order behind Jordan Pickford, Robin Olsen and João Virginia.

With Cenk Tosun rejoining Besiktas on loan Everton are in need of striking cover for Dominic Calvert-Lewin. “We’re looking but we’re not desperate,” Ancelotti said after Saturday’s dismal display against Newcastle. Bernard, also omitted from the match-day squad against Newcastle, is in talks over a move to Al Nasr in Dubai while Jonjoe Kenny has interest from several clubs including Burnley and Celtic.

A couple of Done Deals to indulge in: Domingos Quina has departed Watford to join Granada on loan, while Norwich have snapped up the former Aston Villa goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland. The 30-year-old has signed a deal until the end of the season. The Norway international will provide competition for No 1 Tim Krul.

One last hurrah? Glenn Murray has swapped Watford for Nottingham Forest, joining until the end of the season on a free transfer. The Brighton manager, Graham Potter, has had his say on the veteran striker. “Glenn has been outstanding for this football club, a great pro and pleasure to work with,” Potter says. “He quite rightly has earned legend status here. He will always be welcome back here at the club, at the training ground and the Amex.”

It’s expected to be a slow day at Frank Lampard’s ... Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea. One player who had a chance of leaving was Billy Gilmour, who has been left out of Tuchel’s first two matchday squads. The 19-year-old midfielder was open to the idea of going on loan to get some games under his belt after returning from a knee injury, with his place in Scotland’s squad for the Euros in mind. However I’m told that Gilmour will be staying. Tuchel indicated as much during his unveiling last week, praising the youngster and saying there will be chances for everyone in his squad, and the situation is unlikely to change.

It’s fair to say Mikel Arteta was unwilling to give much away about Arsenal’s deadline day when he faced the media at 9am. Might they sign a left-back before the bell tolls? “Things can happen. They might happen, they might not happen. We are on it,” came the answer. Arteta would, in fact, like to sign some back-up for Kieran Tierney and Crystal Palace’s Patrick van Aanholt is one name that has been mentioned. There is a chance that one could develop today.

As for outgoings, does Arteta know who he would like to send out on loan? “Yes we have decided and we are working on it, so we’ll find out before 11.” Hopefully it won’t take that long to confirm a temporary home for Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who has a clutch of clubs at his tail but seems likely to join either Southampton or Leicester. Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock, who both need to get their careers going, are other names to look out for today. Shkodran Mustafi could also depart, particularly if the club find a way to settle up his contract. At this early stage in the day, talk of a move to defender-hungry Liverpool seems highly fanciful – but stranger things have happened as the last-ditch scramble heats up.

A Christian Eriksen-shaped update:

Ben Davies – no, not that one – is undergoing a medical at Liverpool ahead of a £2m move from Preston. Elsewhere, a swap deal between Southampton and Bournemouth for the strikers Shane Long and Joshua King has been mooted ... but there is work to do if that is to happen. Bournemouth are interested in taking Long on loan until the end of the season and King, who is out of contract in June, heading to St Mary’s on a permanent deal but Ralph Hasenhüttl has other priorities.

The Women’s Super League window may have closed ... but in France, Italy, Spain and Germany plenty of clubs are trying to dot the i’s and cross the t’s on some last-minute deals:

Plenty going on across the Football League: 37-year-old Glenn Murray has joined Nottingham Forest until the end of the season, reuniting with former Brighton manager Chris Hughton, while the Wales midfielder Jonny Williams is heading to Cardiff from Charlton. Rivals Swansea are close to sealing a deal for the 20-year-old Derby forward Morgan Whittaker, who has played under Steve Cooper at youth level for England. Blackburn, meanwhile, are hopeful of landing both Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Harry Pickering before the day is out, the former on loan from Manchester City. Another centre-back, Tosin Adarabioyo, now of Fulham, impressed on loan at Blackburn from City last season.

This morning’s update from the Get French Football News team:

Marseille have received a proposal from Liverpool for Croatia central defender Duje Ćaleta-Car – but OM Head of Football Pablo Longoria wants to sign a replacement and RMC are pessimistic that they will find one in time for Caleta Car to make a move to the Premier League. A deal was agreed last night and the player even went to Marseille Provence Airport to take a flight to Manchester, before being told by the Ligue 1 club not to get on the flight ...

Pini Zahavi’s attempts to broker the loan departure of Dele Alli from Tottenham to PSG look like they will fall short – RMC and L’Équipe believe a deal is improbable owing to Daniel Levy’s insistence that the club find a replacement before sanctioning a deal

Bristol City have shown an interest in 22-year-old Marseille left-back Christopher Rocchia, but a deal looks unlikely owing to the lack of time to complete a transfer

Jean-Clair Todibo will sign for OGC Nice, on loan with an option to buy from Barcelona, should he pass the medical that he is undergoing this morning

• The Serbia winger Nemanja Radonjic is travelling to Germany this morning to complete a loan with €12.5m option to buy move to Hertha Berlin

Stay on top of all of the moves across Europe here:

Liverpool are expected to wrap up that £2m move for the Preston defender Ben Davies, who had been all set for a move to Celtic until Jürgen Klopp and co got on the blower over the weekend. Elsewhere, there is three-way tug-of-war for Arsenal’s Mr Versatile: Ainsley Maitland-Niles. That is a big part of the reason Ralph Hasenhüttl is so keen to bring in the full-back on loan, while Leicester and Newcastle are also trying to twist his arm. José Mourinho says he expects Dele Alli to stick around at Tottenham but a move to PSG is not off the table yet.

Preamble

So, this is it. This time last year Premier League clubs had already splashed more than £200m on shiny new toys but this season, understandably, they are less willing than ever to break the bank. Only four teams have paid a fee for a player to date. Without the prospect of Andrey Arshavin battling the elements to land a move to Arsenal and Fernando Torres swapping blue for red, we are left with a string of rather lukewarm questions: will Liverpool get a £2m deal for Ben Davies over the line? Where will Ainsley Maitland-Niles end up come midnight? Who will Big Sam rope into the relegation fight at West Brom? Will Dele Alli stay put at Spurs, after all? And might there be another twist in the Joshua King saga?
