Transfer deadline day: Mamadou Sakho joins Crystal Palace on loan – as it happened

Latest transfer deals – interactive

Time to wrap things up: I’ll leave you with our guide to the Premier League’s comings and goings this January. Until the summer, it’s been real. Goodnight!

Crystal Palace complete loan signing of Mamadou Sakho

Better late than never...

Ross McCormack has climbed over his gates to catch a train to Nottingham, and agree a loan move to Forest:

Updated

Here’s an update from Dominic Fifield, who says that Crystal Palace have persuaded Liverpool to part with Mamadou Sakho on loan. The club are yet to rubber-stamp the deal just yet, however:

You might have forgotten that there was actual football earlier, with Jürgen Klopp appearing to shout squarely in fourth official Neil Swarbrick’s face after Diego Costa’s penalty was saved. Klopp has said the altercation wasn’t as severe as it seemed:

I turned to him and said: ‘Nobody can beat us.’ Obviously that is absolutely not true but that’s what I said in this moment. I went back to the fourth official and said: ‘Sorry – you are the wrong person to speak to.’ He said: ‘No problem, I like your passion.’ I have never heard that from an official before. That was cool.

Neil Swarbrick: cool.

If there are any Hull fans still fighting sleep out there, I’ve got news for you. Rennes winger Kamil Grosicki has completed his move, subject to international clearance.

Least surprising move of deadline day: Conor McAleny has left Everton on loan, this time to Oxford. The U’s are McAleny’s sixth different loan club, while Everton have also sent Calum Dyson and Leandro Rodríguez out on short-term deals, to Grimsby and Belgium’s Waasland-Beveren.

Lincoln’s Theo Robinson won’t be bringing his blistering pace to Turf Moor – he’s moved to Southend United...

Elsewhere in the Championship, Blackburn are set to bring in Celtic’s Efe Ambrose on loan, while Wigan have signed Omar Bogle, League Two’s top scorer, from Grimsby, as well as Manchester City’s Jack Byrne.

Nottingham Forest have signed a Clough, but it’s Zach Clough, rather than Nigel, who moves to the City Ground. That’s a tidy piece of business, and they could yet add Ross McCormack, who’s having a medical.

Thanks Marcus. The lights are very much on at Club Transfer Window, but there’s a few lost souls still wandering around the dancefloor. Here’s what we’re waiting for:

  • Crystal Palace to confirm the loan signing of Mamadou Sakho
  • Big-money moves for Jordan Rhodes and Ross McCormack
  • Hull to announce deals for Max Gradel and Kamil Grosicki

And on that bombshell I am going to hand over to Niall McVeigh for the last updates on this transfer window. Be nice to him.

And one that didn’t happen

And Villa sign Scott Hogan. And how they need him…

And it looks as if Scott Hogan has joined Aston Villa for an initial fee of £10m which could rise to £15m.

Valencia have made a signing!

Nantes appear to have made a double signing …

Is this for real? City sign someone now? Give me a break…

Andros Townsend not going back to Newcastle by the way. Staying at Crystal Palace.

Updated

And what about this for a signing … £6.99 probably going rate for a rake of that standard these days

It’s past 11 o clock but still they keep coming…

It’s a blow to any live blogger but probably good news for Crystal Palace

Adlene Guédioura has decided to join Middlesbrough instead of Hull City from Watford. Unlikely to make Aitor Karanka think that this has been a good transfer window mind…

Crystal Palace have asked for an extension to complete the Mamadou Sakho deal…

This is an interesting one. Very good player Krystian Bielik.

Jordan Rhodes is set to join Sheffield Wednesday from Middlesbrough for £10m. A lot of money but that is a good signing in my opinion.

I’d suggest reading this Modou Barrow interview, whether you are a Villa fan or not

Leicester have made last-minute signing as well, with Mali international Molla Wagué, who arrives from either one of Granada or Udinese (or both, I get confused about who belongs to whom when it comes to those two clubs and Watford).

Done deal! Hull sign ANOTHER player

Southampton’s new signing, Manolo Gabbiadini has been talking about his move

I am very, very happy. Since I was a kid, one of my dreams was to perform in one of the biggest leagues in the world, so now that it’s happening I can’t wait to start playing. The facilities that I have seen here are an incredible level – top-level standards even for Serie A. These are the sort of facilities that make you want to come here and perform as soon as possible.

Over in the Netherlands, Ajax are very excited about this transfer. “One of the best talents in South America” he is being described as

Crystal Palace complete £11m signing of Milivojevic

Crystal Palace, having won against Bournemouth tonight, complete the £11m signing of Luka Milivojevic.

So that swap deal we talked about the other day – Neil Taylor to Aston Villa and Jordan Ayew to Swansea City - has finally happened. What took them so long?

Here is the announcement on Swansea’s official website.

Hashtag #announceravel. He joins on loan from Lazio.

More news!

Done deal in France…

This is probably a bit more interesting right now…

Quiz time as we wait for the Premier League games to finish and the clubs to do their business.

There has been a goal at Anfield…

Done deal. Norwich sign Ajax left-back Mitchell Dijks on loan for the remainder of the season.

He’s back!

Arouna Koné from Everton to Crystal Palace is close to being done it seems. Striker only has six months left on his contract.

Only three hours left of this transfer window here in England (the German one has already slammed shut) but there are still a fair few deals we expect to go through.

  • Max Gradel to join Hull City from Bournemouth
  • Crystal Palace to sign Luka Milivojevic from Olympiakos for £11m
  • Kamil Grosicki to sign for Hull City from Rennes
  • Adlène Guedioura to join Middlesbrough
  • Southampton to confirm the signing of Manolo Gabbiadini

Not one for this window but it appears as if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is preparing to leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer. In a French radio show on RMC Sport, he told Christophe Dugarry that “if I want to reach the next level I would have to leave in the summer.”

Thomas Tuchel will not be pleased to hear that. Liverpool and Real Madrid fans will be a bit happier.

Meanwhile, there are matches going on in the Premier League and Watford have taken the lead at Arsenal and West Brom are 1-0 up at Middlesbrough.

Reports in France suggesting that there was an official bid for Moussa Dembélé (£35m-£40m depending on who you believe) today but that’s not our understanding. Also, Chelsea were never close to Celtic’s valuation of Craig Gordon.

All today’s deals (and the rest of the month, in fact) here:

That’s it from me for now, I’m handing you back to Marcus Christenson for the last leg. Enjoy the fun and games!

Some interesting team news from Swansea, where Jay Rodriguez is not part of the Southampton squad for tonight’s match after the club rejected two bids from West Brom. Could this mean the striker is on his way? We’ll find out soon enough...

An update from Ben Fisher at Bournemouth now and it appears Nathan Aké won’t be joining Chelsea

Nathan Aké will not be rejoining Bournemouth tonight, although Max Gradel is set to join Hull City for a fee of around £4m and Lewis Grabban will move on loan to Reading for the rest of the season.

Another potential move for Palace now, with Ivory Coast striker Arouna Koné possibly on his way to Selhurst Park. It is understood that Everton would allow him to leave, which could potentially clear the way for Andros Townsend to depart to Newcastle. Watch this space...

Pompey fan Matt Loten has got in touch to let us know about another transfer.

If you’re allowed to post updates, Ed, are we allowed as well? Portsmouth have just confirmed the signing of striker Eoin Doyle, on loan from Preston until the end of the season. We reportedly beat off League One clubs for his signature (including high-flying Bolton), as Doyle was keen to be reunited with Paul Cook, who was his manager at Sligo Rovers and Chesterfield, where they won the League Two title in 2014.

I’m allowed to post my own updates aren’t I? Well Marcus Christenson isn’t looking at the moment so thought I would sneak this one in...

A little aside about Grabban. We used to attend the same school in Croydon and his uncle has picked me up in his cab several times after nights out in the infamous south London hotspot

As discussed earlier, Wigan have dipped into the non-league to replace Norwich-bound Yanic Wildschut. Interesting to see how he steps up.

Some news on Hull’s pursuit of Rennes winger Kamil Grosicki and it seems the Poland international is on his way to Humberside for around £7.7m

Delighted Sheffield Wednesday fan Peter has got in touch regarding his club’s move for Jordan Rhodes.

Last transfer window I sent what I thought was quite a innovative tweet “Rhodes, where we’re going we don’t need Rhodes”. I got one retweet from my brother. We have been linked with him every transfer window for the last 3 years. Looks like the Owls have finally signed him

And Moussa Dembélé seems to have ended any doubts about his future with this tweet. Celtic were adamant they would not sell him today but this is one that could be revisited in the summer

Omar El Kaddouri, who looked like he might be staying at Napoli as late as earlier today, has joined Empoli on a three-and-a-half year deal. Empoli will pay €1.4m for the Moroccan midfielder

It’s all happening now. Sort of...

Southampton’s move for Manolo Gabbiadini looks like going through after the striker passed his medical this afternoon

Looks like Jordan Rhodes could also be on the move from Middlesbrough. Reports say a £10m fee has been agreed for the Scotland striker, who had been interesting Aston Villa

An interesting development now at Bournemouth, who it is claimed have offered £18m to sign Nathan Ake from Chelsea. Remember that the Dutchman spent the first half of the season on loan with Eddie Howe’s side only to be recalled at the start of the month. One to keep an eye on...

Some good news from Hull midfielder Ryan Mason now, who has admitted he is “lucky to be alive” after fracturing his skull in the game against Tottenham last week. Here’s wishing him a full recovery

Real Madrid have just announced they have loaned midfielder to Brazilian side Cruzeiro until June 2018

Some news from France now and Rennes winger Kamil Grosicki could be on his way to Hull. The Tigers had bid for Angers forward Nicolas Pépé but it is understood that he will not be leaving the Ligue 1 side

Senegal defender Kara Mbodji has hit out at some of the Anderlecht fans, accusing them of sending him racist messages. The 27-year-old has been the subject of bids from Leicester and Crystal Palace but has let his feelings be known on Twitter, saying he has “always given 300%” for the Belgian side.

Ighalo agrees £17.1m move to China

Our man in Italy has his finger on pulse and Fabrizio Romano says the deal taking Odion Ighalo to China is now complete despite the Nigeria striker’s reluctance to leave the Premier League.

Odion Ighalo has joined the Chinese side Changchun Yatai for a fee of £17.1m from Watford. The Nigerian striker joined Watford in 2014 and scored 20 league goals as the club were promoted to the Premier League and a further 18 league goals in his first season in the English top flight.
This season, however, the 27-year-old has struggled for form and often been left out of the starting XI by the manager, Walter Mazzari. He was the subject of a bid from China in the summer but both club and player rejected it. Now, the player has, reluctantly it has to be said, agreed to leave the club. He passed a medical on Tuesday and the deal is expected to be announced shortly.

Had enough of transfers for now? Have a peek at today’s Fiver by the excellent Barry Glendenning:

Now everyone remembers Aaron Lennon’s cheery face when he signed for Everton a couple of years back, don’t you? We may have a rival in the form of Ashley Westwood, who has just joined Burnley for £5m. Cheer up Ashley, it’s better than being at Villa!

Crystal Palace have been busy this month and they look close to confirming a third signing of the window

Meanwhile, Palace continue to negotiate with Liverpool over a loan move for Mamadou Sakho, with Martin Caceres a potential backup option. The former Juventus defender is a free agent and can therefore be signed after the deadline, although Palace would probably have to move a couple of players on to free up space.

Now it may be transfer deadline day in most of Europe but that’s not the case everywhere. In particular, the Chinese and Russian markets remain open for almost another month so any deals not completed today such as Branislav Ivanovic’s move to Zenit St Petersburg from Chelsea could still go through at a later date.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to when each transfer window is open around the globe.

A confirmed transfer: Watford’s Jerome Sinclair has joined Birmingham on loan

An update on West Brom’s pursuit of Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez now. It is understood that there has yet to be a third bid for the forward from Tony Pulis having already seen offers of £10m and £12m rejected, with West Brom unlikely to come in again now despite Southampton still intending to sign Manolo Gabbiadini.

Some interesting stats from the Premier League now, who say that clubs are actually making a profit from this month’s transfer window so far:

Total Spend: £174.6m

Total Sales: £205.8m

Net Spend: -£31.2m / OR club profit on player sales: £31.2m

A lot of that income - more than a quarter – has come from the sale of Oscar to China and there is still a long way to go until the deadline. So it could be touch and go whether this month surpasses the previous record total spend in a January transfer window of £209m in 2011.

Another one for the Championship and Leeds have landed Alfonso Pedraza from Villarreal on loan

A historic transfer for you now: Bristol City have signed striker Matty Taylor from deadly rivals Rovers - the first player to make the switch for more than 30 years. And it seems neither the City Twitter account or manager Lee Johnson just couldn’t resist a couple of little digs...

Lee Johnson: “It’ll be a big step up in standard for him, but he’s been able to deal with every challenge that’s been thrown at him so far in his career.” OOOOF!

Updated

Meanwhile Yanic Wildschut’s move to Norwich for £7m (!) , looks like setting off a few dominoes down the pyramid. Wigan are now expected to move for Eastleigh’s Mikael Mandron, with Grimsby’s Omar Bogle continuing to interest clubs in the Championship including Reading and Rotherham.

David Sullivan, no not that one, has been in touch via email to ask if there are any updates on Arsenal. (Shocking, right????) he adds, not unreasonably. Well Carl Jenkinson appears no closer to completing his move to Crystal Palace despite a £7m fee being agreed ages ago. The word is the former Charlton defender wants a cool £70,000 a week to move to south London and join the Sam Allardyce revolution so he may be waiting a while.

As for the player formerly known as Mathieu Debuchy, it seems no one will take him off Arsenal’s hands despite the Frenchman admitting a fee weeks ago that Arsene Wenger barely says hello to him anymore. Sad times.

One of the more remarkable deadline day moves: Steven Caulker, who has not played for QPR in the Championship since the end of October, is undergoing a medical at Lokomotiv Moscow. The Russian club’s Twitter feed is proving something of a tease...

Caulker was once capped by England under Roy Hodgson, in that infamous Zlatan Ibrahimovic-inspired 4-2 defeat in Sweden in 2012, and would move to Lokomotiv on loan.

Manchester City update alert. Nothing to get excited about though I’m afraid...

Pep Guardiola has confirmed Manchester City will not be signing anyone before the 11pm deadline. He said: “We said no. We have enough players. Good players. The window is important for the club, players. Every weekend I am so sad because I have to leave three players at home. While this happens why should we buy. If players leave, maybe. I’m happy [with the squad].”

Plenty of action going on down the Football League pyramid today as well and here’s one from League Two. Raul Correia has joined Blackpool from Evo-Stik First Division North side Radcliffe Borough

An interesting rumour from France now where Sevilla defender Adil Rami is said to be interesting Marseille and PSG

Something new for this month: did you know that you can receive Facebook/Messenger transfer updates on your favourite club (we cover every club in the top flight in England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France)?

And just like that, we have a Newcastle update from Louise Taylor

Cheik Tiote is finally leaving Newcastle - and heading to Shandong Luneng to join former Tyneside team-mate Papiss Cisse...
Meanwhile Rafa Benítez is said to be “optimistic” about his chances of signing Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace as negotiations continue.

  • Still waiting on confirmation on Southampton’s move for Marco
Manolo Gabbiadini from Napoli after the clubs agreed a fee yesterday. Southampton are also lining up Serdar Tasci on loan from Spartak Moscow
  • Gabbiadini’s move to St Mary’s could pave the way for Jay Rodriguez to join West Brom, with the Baggies having seen two bids rejected for the striker. Marc Wilson is also expected to link up with his former manager at Stoke on loan from Bournemouth
  • Crystal Palace are expected to announce the signing of Serbia midfielder Luka Milivojevic and remain in talks with Mamadou Sakho over a loan move from Liverpool. Andros Townsend could still return to Newcastle
  • Celtic are adamant that Chelsea target Moussa Dembélé will not be leaving the club today. The French forward has been in London today to see a knee specialist

Updated

Afternoon everyone, it’s been a long wait but we’re approaching crunchtime in this year’s transfer window. Lots of deals are finally close to completion so let’s take a look at what might be to come in the next few hours...

And with that I will hand you over to Ed Aarons, who will guide you through this madness for the next few hours. I may or may not be back later.

The West Country may not be a footballing hotbed, but hear me out for a minute. There is uproar in these parts about Matty Taylor’s decision to cross the divide and swap Bristol Rovers for Bristol City. Some Bristolians have drawn comparisons with Luis Figo’s decision to swap Barcelona for Real Madrid (conveniently overlooking the fact that Barcelona and Madrid are 623kms apart – obviously there are a few other details that don’t quite match up as well).

Anyway, the bottom line is that it’s a big story in Bristol, not least because Taylor is the first player to make this sort of switch for 30 years (as my colleague Ben Fisher reported earlier). Taylor also happens to have scored more league goals than anyone else in England’s top four divisions since the start of last season. A senior figure at Rovers has told me that they did everything they could to keep Taylor but were powerless because the striker made it absolutely clear that he wanted to go and also in the player’s contract there was a release clause, which was only £300,000.

That figure was set so low because Taylor was out of contract in the summer and expected to leave on a free. Had Rovers not agreed to the modest release clause as part of Taylor’s new deal, the 26-year-old would have almost certainly joined Oxford. For obvious reasons, Rovers would have preferred to sell Taylor to another Championship club than their local rivals but there were no takers. Anyway, get that pig’s head ready for Taylor’s return to Rovers some day… maybe next season the way City are playing lately.

There has been talk about Fulham paying the €10m release clause of the Eibar forward, Sergi Enrich, but that will not happen today. All quiet at Motspur Park.

So, Chelsea are interested in the Celtic striker, Moussa Dembélé, and they know that he is currently in London to see a knee specialist. He has previously had the injury scanned in Glasgow – there is nothing to worry about – but he now has an appointment with one of the top people in the field, just to make sure. It would not be a surprise if Chelsea were to try their luck with a cheeky bid for Dembélé, given that he is in town but, even if they did, the chances of it succeeding and a deal being scrambled over the line before 11pm are remote. Brendan Rodgers and Celtic are adamant about the 20-year-old staying for now and Dembélé himself is relaxed about doing so. This is one that will be revisited in the summer.

The last thing I needed right now, frankly, was a triple Darmstadt signing. But here they are… Poor Rob Bleaney who has to update the transfer interactive.

Scott Hogan having a medical at Aston Villa

Scott Hogan has arrived at Aston Villa’s training ground for a medical after Brentford accepted an offer believed to be an initial £10m for the striker. West Ham had been the frontrunners to sign the 24-year-old who once played for non-league side Stocksbridge Park Steels but decided not to come back with a fourth bid having had three offers turned down by Brentford earlier this month, including one worth up to £12.5m.

The Londoners were holding out for a £15m fee with bonuses and it is understood that Villa were the first to match that offer despite interest from Crystal Palace and West Brom, with an extra £5m due if certain clauses related to appearances and goals are met. Hogan’s former club Rochdale are also due 30% of the fee due to a sell-on clause they inserted when they sold the Salford-born striker in 2014. Incidentally, Hogan was turned down by Rochdale twice before they eventually signed him from non-league side Hyde in 2013. That looks like a shrewd investment now.

Wayne Rooney will not be allowed to leave United this season

Wayne Rooney will not be allowed to leave Manchester United before the end of the season, with José Mourinho stating he cannot afford to lose any more players following the departures of Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay.

Rooney is the subject of interest from clubs in China’s Super League, the competition’s transfer window closing at the end of February. Yet after Schneiderlin was sold to Everton and Depay to Lyon, Mourinho does not want his squad to be further depleted, especially as United are still competing in all four competitions.

Asked if the captain will still be at the club at the campaign’s close Mourinho said: “Yeah. We don’t have players in, we don’t have players out, we lost two players from the squad. You can say Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin did not play a lot, but the reality is they played some matches, and when they did, others didn’t, and when they played, others were rested. When Schneiderlin played, it meant [Paul] Pogba, [Michael] Carrick or [Ander] Herrera didn’t.

“You lose players sometimes it does not look important because they were not first-choice players, but in the end they’re important if someone is going to have a difficult season. I hope that’s us and we’re in the cup competitions.

Celta Vigo have signed the young attacking midfielder Andrew Hjulsager from Brøndby in Denmark. Hjulsager, who will cost the La Liga side €1m, will join up with his compatriots Daniel Wass and Pione Sisto at the Spanish club. He could make his debut against Real Madrid this weekend.

Luka Milivojevic is having a medical in central London before, if all goes according to plan, joining Crystal Palace in an £11m deal from Olympiakos (subject to international clearance). Leicester have turned down an improved bid from Sunderland for Leonardo Ulloa, believed to be £8m. If the striker goes anywhere it is more likely to be Spain. Robbie Brady is expected to leave Norwich City today with Burnley the most likely destination.

I can understand why no club are willing to pay Liverpool the £20m asking price for Mamadou Sakho. Jürgen Klopp has made it clear he doesn’t trust him – even playing Lucas in defence ahead of him – and then to expect any club to pay £20m is a bit odd. Why not sell him for £10m and then at least you’d save £100,000 a week on his salary.

Drew Gough emails on Adebayor joining Başakşehir

Just a thought on players joining Turkish clubs as they near the end of their careers. As someone who’s relocated to Istanbul: I get it. Lovely weather, great food, gorgeous city, and a short hop to the rest of Europe. Mind you, saying Başakşehir is an Istanbul-based club is like saying Watford are a London-based club: it’s a funny suburb an hour from the centre of the city. Still, I get it, Emmanuel.

A few updates:

  • Andy Robertson is not leaving Hull City, says Marco Silva
  • Besiktas have signed Demba Ba
  • Aston Villa close on securing Scott Hogan transfer
  • Brentford to sign Sergi Canos for £2.5m

Credit here to Stuart James who keeps filing transfer updates despite discovering that he seems to be the only staff writer who doesn’t get a picture with his byline. Keep going Stu! Here he is on Swansea:

It has been a productive transfer window for Swansea so far, given the signings of Martin Olsson, Tom Carroll and Luciano Narsingh, plus the imminent arrival of Jordan Ayew, yet the Welsh club look set to miss out on bringing in the experienced central defender that was so badly needed to strengthen their fragile backline. “Not impossible but very unlikely” is how Swansea describe their chances of signing a central defender on deadline day to compete with Alfie Mawson and Federico Fernandez. The other two options in that position, Mike van der Hoorn and Jordi Amat, are quite simply not up to the job.

Lisandro Ezequiel Lopez, the Benfica centre-back, was the No1 target but the deal was far from straightforward and ultimately deemed too expensive. Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho was mooted at one point but Swansea baulked at the £12m asking price and £105k a week wages. As things stand, they will hope that Mawson and Fernandez stay fit.

This is brilliant, from Paul Joyce (no, not that Paul Joyce). The old man with a beard on the ‘Der Westen’ website is Opa Pritschikowski (real name: ‘Paul Schwarz’), a miner who used to ring his bell when the players ran on to the pitch in the old Glückauf-Kampfbahn stadium. He died in 1983 but has his own song, which describes him carrying on going to watch Schalke no matter how old he got. Which is fitting, because any Schalke fans who managed to sit through their recent performances would have aged even quicker than Opa Pritschikowski did.

And here is the song. So wonderfully German.

Looks like the Monaco striker Lacina Traoré will be joining Sporting Gijón on loan.

Jay Rodriguez in talks with Southampton regarding his future

Jay Rodriguez is talking to Southampton to try to establish where he stands in terms of his future at the club and the sort of playing opportunities he will get over the remainder of the season and beyond. Rodriguez was frustrated earlier in the season that Claude Puel, the Southampton manager, had not given him a run of matches, and the arrival of Manolo Gabbiadini from Napoli has raised more questions for Rodriguez about his role at the club, especially given Puel has so many attacking options. West Bromwich Albion have a longstanding interest in Rodriguez, who was previously on Tottenham’s radar, and tabled a £10m bid, yet Southampton have not given them any encouragement. Whether that could change on the back of Rodriguez’s discussions remains to be seen.

Everton really have secured £7.5m plus £1.5m in add-ons from Sunderland for Bryan Oviedo and Darron Gibson. The bulk of the fee is understood to be for the Costa Rican left-back. Must be payback from David Moyes for that cheeky double-bid for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines when at Manchester United. Anyway, having confirmed that Burnley’s Michael Keane “is on the list” yesterday – albeit more of a long-term target – Ronald Koeman did not rule out late additions providing he feels they will immediately enhance the first team. The Everton manager is unlikely to stand in the way of Arouna Koné or Aaron Lennon leaving Goodison Park should acceptable offers arrive today.

Really? There is a José Rodríguez as well as a Jesé Rodríguez. This is too complicated. Either way, on the same day as Jesé went to Spain on loan so does José…

Schalke turn down Chelsea bid for Sead Kolasinac

The Bundesliga club have turned down a bid from Chelsea for the 23-year-old Bosnian, who is out of contract in the summer. The Schalke sporting director, Christian Heidel, said: “Yes, there was in inquiry but that was immediately turned down”

This is a report from Der Western on the matter but I can’t for the life of me figure out why there is a picture of an old man with a beard and an even older bell with “Schalke” on it.

Mamadou Sakho latest

Apart from hoping Mamadou Sakho finally takes the hint and clears off to Crystal Palace or Southampton, and the latest hint is accepting it may have to be a loan deal and not a permanent £20m transfer, Liverpool’s business is expected to concentrate on loan moves for their young players. Connor Randall’s first start of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday may also prove his last with several Championship clubs interested in the 21-year-old defender. Jordan Williams could also be set for his third loan spell away from Anfield with MK Dons linked with the Welsh midfielder.

The wonderful David Squires and his take on the transfer window

Meanwhile, over in Germany, Bayern Munich have agreed to let the 17-year-old Toni Trograncic join Ajax. Trograncic was player Pep Guardiola had high hopes for and had him training with the first team at the age of 15. His career has stalled though and the man who was dubbed “the new Toni Kroos” will have to see whether he can rebuild it in the Netherlands. Hopefully he can.

Here is the brilliant Emmanuel Adebayor interview by Nick Ames from this month

Emmanuel Adebayor signs for Basaksehir

Update and background from Turkish Football, who you can follow here.

Emmanuel Adebayor has completed his move to Süper Lig outfit Basaksehir on an 18-month move. The former Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham striker had been a free agent for six months prior to signing for the Istanbul based side.

Adebayor was linked with several Turkish clubs over the winter transfer window before arriving in Turkey yesterday. The 32-year-old underwent his medical at the Medipol Mega University hospital.

There had been concerns over Adebayor’s fitness however, Basaksehir chief scout Alioum Saidou watched Adebayor in the African Cup of Nations before giving the club the all clear to push ahead with the transfer.

Basaksehir have included several performance related clauses and bonuses in Adebayor’s contract. The Togo international will receive bonuses depending on whether Basaksehir qualify for Europa League or Champions League football next season.

Basaksehir may seem an unlikely choice for Adebayor who was flirting with the idea of making a Premier League return but the club are currently second in the Süper Lig just one point behind reigning champions Besiktas. They are coached by former Turkish national team manager Abdullah Avci who has secured a top-four finish for the past two seasons.

Avci has established a reputation as making astute transfers earning himself the nickname the Warren Buffet of football in Turkey.

Basaksehir are better known for unearthing rising stars. Nineteen-year-old Cengiz Under has turned out to be one of the transfers of the season but was signed for just £600,000 from signed from Altinordu. Avci also snapped up 21-year-old Irfan Can Kahveci from Genclerbirligi for £1.3m in January. The club do however, also invest in experience and former Newcastle United and Inter midfielder Emre Belozoglu is one of the most in-form players in the league at the ripe - footballing - age of 36.

The Istanbul based side have lost just one game this season, conceded the fewest number of goals (12) and only Besiktas, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce have scored more goals. The club were founded in 1990 as İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor before rebranding as Istanbul Basaksehir.

Basaksehir would become the sixth different team to lift the Turkish league title if they were to be crowned championship this season.

Eamonn Maloney gets in touch via email regarding Trent Sainsbury, who is about to join Inter.

Australian here - please help. What is noteworthy or amusing about a mighty Socceroo’s name? The juxtaposition of a bland first name evocative of an Aussie labourer with a surname like one of your supermarkets?

Moussa Dembélé not going anywhere today apparently (apart from to London for a check on his knee) but either way you would have expected Ed Aarons to put the accents on before tweeting…

Done deal! And as Fabrizio Romano reported yesterday already, Andrea Ranocchia has joined Hull City on loan from Inter.

Trent Sainsbury? What a name.

Time for a fun quiz while we input the latest Lille signing (there will be a few of those today)?

Here is Ewan Murray on the deadline day’s hottest prospect, Celtic’s Moussa Dembélé

If Aitor Karanka is unhappy at Middlesbrough, so, too - albeit in a much more subtle way - is his compatriot Rafa Benítez at Newcastle. This month has seen the appearance of the first fault lines in the relationship between Newcastle’s manager and Mike Ashley, the club’s owner. Essentially Ashley seems to believe Benitez should secure promotion without spending but the Spaniard is adamant further investment is needed to guarantee an immediate return to the Premier League.

Accordingly Benitez desperately wants Andros Townsend back from Crystal Palace - whether he gets his way may ultimately help determine his longer term future on Tyneside.

Meanwhile Tim Krul, whose loan at Ajax has been terminated after he failed to break into the first team following recovery from a nasty cruciate injury, seems set to join Watford, also on loan. The Holland goalkeeper desperately needs some game time but has fallen down the pecking order at Newcastle.

Another big question on Tyneside is whether Cheik Tioté – apparently on the point leaving St James’ Park for the best part of a couple of years now but somehow never quite managing it – finally departs today. Don’t bet on it.

Ravel Morrison is joining QPR on loan from Lazio, according to Sky Italia (and pretty impressive by Mr Baiocchini to get all that in in two languages…

Sam Allardyce’s squad may be on the south coast ahead of their game at Bournemouth this evening, but Crystal Palace are expecting a busy day as they seek to reinforce ahead of tonight’s cut-off. Having already added Jeffrey Schlupp and Patrick van Aanholt to their ranks, they are confident of securing Luka Milivojevic from Olympiakos for around £11m. The Serbian midfielder has apparently said his goodbyes at the Greek club and is London-bound for a medical.

A number of centre-halves are under consideration, with Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho, the Newcastle defender Chancel Mbemba and Kara Mbodji at Anderlecht all under strong consideration. Reports in Belgium suggest a £10m offer for the latter has already been rejected, while Sakho has spoken of Palace’s interest in this morning l’Equipe, suggesting he may need a few hours still to consider the move (or, presumably, to see if other interest crystalises from clubs further up the division).

Palace are one of a number of clubs monitoring Scott Hogan at Brentford, with Aston Villa having also expressed an interest in the striker. Red Bull Leipzig’s under-used Scotland international, Oliver Burke, has also been mentioned in dispatches though securing him may only become a priority if Andros Townsend returns to Newcastle - the player is with the Palace squad at present ahead of tonight’s game. There will be other departures today, with Jordon Mutch interesting Reading, Lee Chung-yong a target for Birmingham and, if Hogan moves to Selhurst Park, Sullay Kaikai likely to return to Brentford on loan.

Empoli have signed Arnel Jakupovic from Middlesbrough

The current position, it is understood, regarding Ashley Young is that Manchester United expect him to stay and that José Mourinho does not expect to do any business at all – in or out before the deadline. The usual caveat about this being football and the wacky world of transfers and so never say absolutely never applies, of course.

Big news from Bristol! Bristol Rovers striker, and 19-goal top-scorer Matty Taylor is set to become the first player to directly join Bristol City and cross the divide for 30 years. The last player to do so was Trevor Morgan in 1987. The 26-year-old is heading for a medical ahead of a proposed move, after City triggered a release clause in the player’s contract.

Hull City are another club with an extremely important day ahead of them. Here is the latest.

Yann M’Vila looms large at the top of Marco Silva’s Hull shopping list. Mike Phelan’s successor would, ideally, like five signings today but the Rubin Kazan midfielder is apparently the one he wants more than any other. Anyone who watched the former France midfielder help keep Sunderland up last season will understand precisely why. M’Vila was on a different level to his Wearside team-mates and consistently raised the tone at the Stadium of Light. If Silva succeeds Hull’s survival chances will surely improve – and Sunderland fans will be very, very, cross.

Burnley meanwhile are still hoping to sign Andy Robertson, Hull’s bright young left back for £10m… as the Allam family, the club’s owners, continue to attempt to end the window firmly in profit but with a rebuilt team. Talk about high stakes gambles.

Another Hull target joins … another club. After Leon Bailey signing for Bayer Leverkusen we now have Jesé Rodríguez moving to Las Palmas on loan. Aitor Karanka will be fuming.

Tom Gourd gets in touch via email.

VVV stands for ‘Venlose Voetbal Vereniging’, which apparently means ‘Venlo Football Association’. ‘Venlo’ is a municipality and a city in the southeastern Netherlands, near the German border.

Could that be right? Football Association. Football club I’d think (just guessing from the word förening in Swedish)

Well, how about this. Inter’s Jonathan Biabiany has turned down an offer to join Chelsea on loan for the rest of the season. He is not keen on joining a club on loan and is also waiting for an offer from China.

Arsenal’s Gedion Zelalem has joined VVV Venlo on loan. I wonder what the VVV stands for. Anyone?

Here is what we can expect from France today, courtesy of the excellent people at Get French Football News, who you can follow here. The Lille situation is quite remarkable. Talk about last-minute shopping. It’s like having to buy all your Christmas presents on the 24th… And spare a thought for Bordeaux…

  • After finally receiving the green light from the French football financial watchdog, the DNCG, yesterday, Lille can now formalise all the deals they have been working on this month. This means they could announce as many as 7 incomings in one day, having already confirmed the signing of Anwar El Ghazi this morning. Gerson (Roma), Gabriel (Avai) and Júnior Alonso (Cerro Porteño) will all also certainly officially be Lille players by the end of the day.
  • Lyon & Marseille remain in the market for a striker. The latter side are quite confident about signing Angers SCO attacker Nicolas Pepé, but face competition from Hull City and Newcastle United in England for the Ivorian international.
  • Crystal Palace remain out in front for Mamadou Sakho, according to the French press, but only because they are the only side willing to meet Liverpool’s £20m demands. Sakho would prefer a move to Southampton, but Puel’s outfit have only made an initial loan attempt.
  • Bordeaux have been priced out of a move for Hoffenheim defender Fabian Schär. Manager Jocelyn Gourvennec has described the signing of a centre-back today as a “necessity”.

Tosin Adarabioyo will not leave Manchester City before the window closes, despite interest from other clubs and the 19-year-old defender having only six months left on his contract. Discussions are ongoing regarding new terms and City, it is understood, are confident he will sign a fresh deal and commit himself to the club in the long term. Negotiations have become prolonged due to Adarabioyo’s demands though there is a sense an agreement will be reached in the end.

Here are all the moves involving clubs in the top five leagues in Europe - day by day and club by club.

We’ve had 430 transfers for a total value of £554,330,639 so far but I reckon we will sail past 500 today and probably £650m. Incredible really for a quiet January window.

There really aren’t enough unveilings with dogs in the background.

The marginalised Middlesbrough winger Carlos de Pena has joined Spanish second tier side Real Oviedo on loan until the end of the season as Aitor Karanka continues to fume about his board’s failure to secure the names at the top of his shopping list - Robert Snodgrass, Jesé, Bojan et al - this month.

Boro’s manager spent Monday’s press conference effectively throwing his toys out of his pram as he sulkily set himself on an apparent collision course with Steve Gibson, Boro’s owner. It should be intriguing to track events on Teesside in the coming weeks but, more immediately, today will determine whether Jordan Rhodes finally escapes Boro. So prolific at Championship level, Rhodes has barely been offered a kick this season – which rather begs the question are Karanka’s two signings so far this January - the strikers Rudy Gestede and Patrick Bamford – really better than the forward whose vital goals helped clinch last spring’s promotion?

We are less sure about Saed Kolasinac to Chelsea though. Reports in Germany seem to suggest that Schalke are going to stand firm and not allow him to leave. Whether that is just a ploy and an attempt to get Chelsea to up their bid of £8m remains to be seen.

We also expect this deal to be confirmed today

News on Emmanuel Adebayor soon. He’s found himself a new club after his impressive performances at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Leon Bailey, a Hull target, has joined Bayer Leverkusen, saying that the club “is well known for developing players and that the football that is played there is very attractive”.

Lille have signed the extremely talented winger Anwar El Ghazi from Ajax. Great signing in my opinion. About €7m.

Catching up from yesterday, here is our story on Moussa Dembélé, by Dominic Fifield and Ewan Murray. What a deadline day deal that would be.

Nice have made their first signing of the transfer window, Mounir Obbadi

Good morning and welcome to our last transfer blog this window. Yes, it has come to this. It is the last day of January and clubs have less than 24 hours to complete deals they could have wrapped up several weeks ago. But let’s now dwell on that. It should be good actually. So many deals that could happen. Moussa Dembélé to Chelsea? Scott Hogan to Aston Villa? Tim Krul to Watford?

There has been a done deal already in France (probably several but I am struggling to keep up already…) but first, here is this morning’s Rumour Mill, including Yannick Carrasco possibly joining Manchester United
