'Transfer clause' that saw Liverpool beat Celtic to Ben Davies signing

Liverpool completed one of the most surprising deals of transfer deadline day when they signed Ben Davies from Preston North End.

The 25-year-old looked to be on verge of agreeing a pre-contract agreement with Celtic, which would see him join the Scottish club as a free agent when his contract expired in the summer.

Liverpool intervened and bolstered their defensive options after agreeing a £1.6million deal, which will cost the Reds just £500k initially.

After the move, Preston boss Alex Neil said: “The Liverpool move came out of the blue. I think he was shocked.

"I just said, ‘Listen you’ve just got to make sure you get this across the line’.

“He’s earned his move and when he gets his opportunity he has to show everybody what he’s about.”

Celtic could have already had a deal wrapped up but their insistence on a clause stating the defender had to be fit and ready to play when he arrived at Celtic Park delayed the deal being confirmed, according to the Sunday People.

After signing for the Reds, Davies said: “I’m obviously delighted to be here. It’s a huge opportunity.

"Obviously it came as a bit of a surprise when it first came but once you start to get your head around it, the opportunity that is in front of me is incredible.

"I’d be silly to not make the most of it and learn off the players."

Davies could make his Premier League debut for Liverpool against Manchester City on Sunday after he was an unused substitute in Wednesday night's 1-0 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

That reverse was Liverpool's second in a row at Anfield after surrendering their 68-match unbeaten run against Burnley the week before.
