Transfer blow for Arsenal & Unai Emery as summer target performs u-turn by signing new contract

Nicolas Tagliafico has performed a stunning u-turn by signing a new contract at Ajax, amid links to Arsenal.

football.London  understands a new left-back is very much on the agenda for Unai Emery this summer and Argentinian reporter Martin Liberman  first claimed in March that the Gunners are interested in Tagliafico.

They were even handed a massive boost when the defender's representative, Ricardo Schlieper, said a contract offer from the Champions League semi-finalists had been turned down.

"Ajax made an offer, but it wasn't accepted because it's the right time to take a leap," he told Muy Independiente Radio. "Let's see what happens in the market."

"There has been no talk of numbers with Ajax, but they will ask for a significant amount – I think it will be more than €20million [£17m]."

However, the north London outfit were dealt a blow at the beginning of the month with Tagliafico outlining his intentions to stay with the Eredivisie champions for at least one more season an thus ruling out a move to the Emirates Stadium.

And now it has been confirmed by Schlieper that the 26-year-old has signed a new deal - just a few weeks after rejecting an offer.

“Nicolas has just signed a contract for the next season, and will stay at Ajax," Schlieper told InterDipendenza.net.

"The new agreement includes an important salary increase. Marc Overmars has raised his salary, with the intention of making him stay one more year."

With that said, Schlieper has put Arsenal on alert with comments regarding where his client could play football in the 2020/21 season amid links to Inter Milan.

"No one from Inter called to get information. It was just news from journalists. La Liga, the Premier League are all important leagues for him," he added. "Right now even Serie A and Inter are, certainly not like in the 90s. I don't know what will happen in a year from now.

"If from next season, Inter, Juve or some great team will want Nico, he would obviously be interested."
