Tranmere Rovers chief reveals plans for a new stadium are 'on the drawing board'

It's been revealed plans for a new stadium for freshly-promoted League One side Tranmere Rovers are "on the drawing board".

Vice-chairman Nicola Palios has said it would be a "massive and complicated project" for the Merseyside club, but that discussions take place "from time to time" over the possibility.

The news comes as Rovers prepare to kick off their League One campaign against Rochdale on Saturday at their current Prenton Park home after two successive promotions, achieved by winning dramatic play-off finals at Wembley.

Speaking exclusively to BusinessLive, Ms Palios said: “It’s about more than one consideration - not just about crowd sizes, but also about being able to generate other incomes to sustain the football club for the long term - and about whether moving stadium would benefit the wider community.”

She said if any move were to take place, it could mean a “modern, state-of-the-art facility” including a concert venue - in a bid to help “make Wirral a more attractive place to live and visit”.

Ms Palios would not be drawn on any further details about the potential of a new stadium, but she said: “We have mooted it and we do talk to people about it from time to time. It would be a massive and complicated project. The idea is on the drawing board at this stage.”

The full interview, in which Ms Palios discusses diversity in football, whether Rovers compete with Liverpool and Everton for fans - and the club's whirlwind story, will be published on BusinessLive next week.
