Tranmere Rovers bid to move Papa John's Trophy final unsuccessful

Tranmere Rovers' bid to move the final of the Papa John's Trophy has been unsuccessful.

The League Two club had requested that the final be postponed until after May 17 in the hope that fans would be allowed back into the home of English football.

Rovers made the final of the competition after defeating Sunderland's League One rivals Oxford United 2-0 in their semi-final, while the Black Cats defeated Lincoln City on penalties.

Tranmere are no strangers to Wembley, having appeared in three consecutive promotion play-off finals between 2017 and 2019.

Around 12,000 and 15,000 fans from the Wirral descended on the capital for those fixtures but won't be making the trip this time round.

The club's official Twitter account released a statement from Mark Palios, which said: "Having fully explored the potential to move the date of the Papa John Trophy final to a later date so as to allow fans to attend, it has been concluded that, sadly, this will not be possible.

"The final will be played on 14th March as scheduled."
