Tranmere in brutal Rangers troll as English minnows take aim at 'Invincible' tag after pre-season upset

Tranmere couldn't resist a post-match gloat on social media as they celebrated their pre-season win over over Rangers.

The English League Two side inflicted a 1-0 defeat on the Scottish champions in a low-key friendly at Prenton Park which saw Steven Gerrard field two entirely different teams at the start of both halves.

Despite the game being just a warm-up, Micky Mellon's minnows took a cheeky dig at the Premiership champions unbeaten league record.

On the official Tranmere TikTok account, they posted a clip of James Tavernier lifting the title at the end of last season.

They commented on the post "Invincible Scottish champions 2020/21."

The next clip then cuts to Tranmere's winner from the weekend, as well as Jermain Defoe's horror miss in the warm-up defeat.

The text makes the comparison: "Pre-season friendly against us in League Two."

The comment on the post reads: "It’s only a joke!"

The wind-up is in stark contrast to Mellon's comments on the champions as he heaped praise on Gerrard's men ahead of another Celtic title fight.

He said: " Rangers will be a force again. They will drive on again and I’m sure it will be a keenly fought battle between the big two again.

“Rangers will be more experienced this season and they will be hungry again to get some more of what they enjoyed last season.

“They will now get a reaction from the other side of the city from Celtic so it should be a keenly contested battle.”
