Tranmere discover their potential FA Cup fourth round opponents

Tranmere have been handed a mouth-watering potential home tie against either Manchester United or Wolves in the FA Cup fourth round should they overcome Premier League Watford in their third round replay.

Rovers host the Hornets at Prenton Park on Wednesday January 15 after completing a remarkable comeback against last season's finalists on Saturday.

Despite trailing 3-0 with over an hour played at Vicarage Road, Micky Mellon's League One outfit recovered to draw 3-3 with goals from Connor Jennings (65), Manny Monthe (78) and a penalty from Paul Mullin (87).

Tranmere will be hoping to turn back the clock to their famous cup ties of the 1990s and early 2000s when Watford come to Wirral and will be buoyed by comments from opposition boss Nigel Pearson, who having inherited a side in a relegation battle, declaring after making nine changes to his starting line-up for their first meeting: “The league is our priority and I make no apologies.

“It was never my intention to do anything other than protect the squad.”

Rovers have only ever faced Manchester United once, losing 5-0 at Old Trafford in a League Cup tie in the 1976/77 season.

They have played Wolves on some 32 occasions over the years, winning seven games, drawing seven and losing 18.

The Black Country outfit have won both their previous FA Cup tie meetings 1-0, both of which were at Prenton Park, in 1983 and 2010 respectively.

Their last meeting came in League One on New Year's Day 2014 when Ryan Lowe's 34th minute opener was cancelled out by David Edwards on 55 minutes in a 1-1 draw at Prenton Park.

Should Tranmere progress on this occasion then their fourth round tie will take place on the weekend of Saturday January 25.
