Tranmere battling Bristol Rovers and Blackpool for Plymouth Argyle defender Ryan Edwards

A newly-promoted side has entered the race for Plymouth defender Ryan Edwards.

Tranmere Rovers have joined Bristol Rovers , Blackpool and a host of others in their pursuit of the 25-year-old centre-back, who is is out of contract at Home Park and is available on a free transfer.

Doncaster Rovers, Fleetwood Town, Peterborough, Bradford City and the Scottish Premiership have also been touted as possible destinations, but Blackpool are believed to be the frontrunners.

However, transfer gossip guru Alan Nixon revealed Merseyside club Tranmere are 'lurking'.

Edwards is from Liverpool so a move back to the north-west could be tempting after the Super White Army were promoted to League One via the play-offs.

Nixon has previously said Bristol Rovers  would view Edwards as a starter, most likely as a replacement for Tom Lockyer, who has turned down a new contract in an attempt find higher-league football.

According to The Sun man reports Edwards has already had a medical at Blackpool are wide of the mark.

The centre-back has made 61 league appearances for Plymouth over two seasons, scoring eight goals.

This season he played 38 times as the Pilgrims were relegated to League Two.

Despite being offered a new deal at Home Park, Edwards confirmed he will be leaving the club on Twitter earlier this month, thanking them for sticking by him after being diagnosed with testicular cancer last season.

He said: "Want to say a huge thanks to Plymouth Argyle for giving me a chance to play for the club.

"It's been a crazy two-year journey for obvious reasons but what a club to represent!

"A massive thank you to everyone involved with the club, you all stood by me when I needed your support the most and that's something that will live with me for the rest of my days.

"Hopefully we cross paths sometime in the future."
