Tranmere 0-6 Man Utd: Red Devils romp into FA Cup fifth round - 5 talking points

Manchester United strolled into the fifth round of the FA Cup League One Tranmere by smashing Tranmere for six.

Harry Maguire got the rout moving in the 10th minute with an outrageous blast from the edge of the area - his first United goal since his £80million transfer in the summer.

Three minutes later Diogo Dalot fired into the bottom corner before Jesse Lingard bagged a rare goal.

Phil Jones nodded in an Andreas Pereira corner and Anthony Martial popped in to make it 5-0 at half-time.

Mason Greenwood slotted in a penalty, after hapless keeper Scott Davies upended Tahith Chong to round off the victory romp.

Here are 5 talking points from Prenton Park...

1. Statement of intent or papering over the cracks?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under pressure as United boss (EMPICS Sport)

The answer to that question can only really be answered in the coming weeks.

But this felt like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players proving they are Manchester United- a club which should be sweeping away lower league opposition with complete disdain.

There is still plenty of negativity around United, with supporters chanting the disgusting "Ed Woodward is going to die", "Love United, Hate Glazers" and various other anti-board songs.

A result of this magnitude will inevitably put some smiles back on faces but the Premier League reality of sitting fifth and losing to Burnley last week hasn't gone away.

Only Manchester City next up on Wednesday...the perfect barometer

2. The Pitch

Saying the pitch at Prenton Park did not look pretty could be classed as a fairly hefty understatement.

The touchline furthest away from the dugouts would have been sniffed at by pigs - with the ball predictably unpredictable in its bounce and roll.

It certainly wouldn't have looked out of place in a classic 1970s upset, you almost expected to blink and see Ronnie Radford or Keith Houchen strolling into vision.

In fairness to Tranmere, this was their third home game in nine days.

United didn't seemed too hampered by it as they posted a similar pass completion record to that against Burnley, and Solskjaer's men weren't prevented from playing a possession style.

Someone harsher than I would suggest ripping up the Old Trafford turf to try and mimic the mud bath.

3. The Jesse Lingard Paradox

Would the real Jesse Lingard please stand up?

Actually what is the real Jesse Lingard?

The hopeless attacking midfielder who doesn't score or assist for months at a time, or 'Messi Lingard' as he was dubbed on social media, perhaps ironically, on this occasion.

It had been 366 days since his last domestic goal, which came in the FA Cup fourth round last year.

Can you be an FA Cup fourth round specialist?

Hopefully the goal, and the man of the match award, will give him some much needed confidence.

4. Defenders scoring stunners

Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot and Phil Jones all got on the scoresheet - in other words two centre backs and a full back.

What that doesn't tell you, though, is the nature of the goal.

That Maguire picked the ball up, dropped his shoulder and pulled off a 'see it to believe it' thunder bolt to beat Scott Davies.

Or Dalot playing a delicious one-two with Anthony Martial before chopping onto his right foot and fired into the bottom corner.

Although, the United social media team were most surprised about Jones's header to make it 4-0.

"PHIL JONES HAS SCORED" screamed the Twitter feed with a gif devoid of personalisation, with the club obviously never bothering to create an animation for the unlikely event of a Jones goal.

Poor Victor Lindelof looked left out.

5. United penalties

In the embryonic stages of the season, there was a narrative arc about penalties at United.

Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford quarrelled over taking a spot kick against Wolves- which saw the Frenchman branded as "selfish" by Gary Neville.

Both Pogba and Rashford, along with Anthony Martial, have all failed to convert penalties over the course of this campaign.

So step up Mason Greenwood to bury in on a less than ideal base.

In doing so he became the youngest player to reach double figures for the Red Devils.

Although he had to be forced into taking the penalty by Solskjaer, via Jones, who sent on a message telling him he was the designated taker - rather than Lingard or Andreas Pereira who were arguing over who should be the man to strike.
