TRANG - Large posters on the sides of roads and in public areas announcing details of funerals are a tradition unique to Trang province, and not only invite people to attend, they also honour the deceased.

The public invitations show pictures of the departed and give details of the ceremony, the place and time.

They are usually erected along heavily used roads and in crowded areas, where they are most likely to be seen by relatives, friends and acquaintances of the deceased, with no need to issue personal invitations.

"It is an old tradition of Trang people. The posters are also seen as honouring the deceased," Karuna Dechatiwong na Ayutthaya, Trang director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said on Wednesday.

There were often as many as 10 funeral signs posted at popular locations. And they not only drew the attention of local people, visitors from outside the province, both Thai and foreign, were also often seen looking at them, she said.
