Tram passenger smashes windows and throws rocks leaving commuters terrified

A man smashed windows and threw rocks at passengers during a terrifying incident on a tram in Manchester.

Footage shows the unidentified man explode into a fit of rage after he reportedly became involved in an argument with a woman and two men he was travelling with.

The altercation happened on a service travelling from Rochdale into Manchester city centre at about 7pm, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Witnesses reported the man became increasingly agitated as he began shouting and became violent towards himself.

One person said they were so frightened they considered pressing the emergency button, but feared it would make the situation worse.

"The guy started headbutting the window," Thomas Bristow said.

"It was really hard, I was surprised he was still standing.

"People were quite scared."

In a video taken by another passenger the man can be seen taking his top off and throwing his watch at the tram doors.

One of the man's friends can be heard shouting: "Stop winding him up."

Later the man disembarked from the carriage but then walk between the tracks in front of the tram.

"I stepped out to see what was going on," said Thomas.

"I was waiting for the tram to go when I realised he was throwing rocks at the tram.

"One went through the window and hit one poor guy in the head."

After arriving in the city centre, the driver told passengers they would need to get off because the tram was being taken out of service due to the damage.

At least one passenger called police, it is understood.

Steve Todd, 26, was the passenger hit in the face by the rock.

He was on his way into the city centre from Rochdale for a night out with his girlfriend when he was caught up in the melee.

He said he didn't want to let it spoil the evening and would go for a medical check up in the morning.

"The rock came straight through the window and grazed my left eye," said Steve.

"It hit another lady and the window fully shattered.

"There was some blood but I'll be OK."

Steve said he had "no idea" what caused the man's outburst, although reports from other witnesses suggest he might have had mental health issues.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed it is now looking into the incident but no arrest have yet been made.
