Shortly after 7.30pm, Metrolink tweeted: “Due to Road Traffic accident there is currently no service between Media City and Eccles.”

Just after 8pm, the tram operator added that services had resumed although passengers should expect some delays to their journey.

The Twitter account posted: “Services are now travelling through, however they are subject to delays.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

A spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester confirmed there had been an incident between the tram and a vehicle at Weaste tram stop.

There were believed to have been no injuries reported.

An eye-witness, who did not wish to be named, told the M.E.N: "The air bags were out but all the passengers looked okay."

Greater Manchester Police has been contacted for comment.
