Tram driver forced to 'slam on brakes as car goes through red light' in Oldham

A tram driver was forced to 'slam on the brakes after a car went through a red light' in Oldham.

The Metrolink line was blocked between Westwood and Oldham Mumps due to a road traffic collision at around 7.50am this morning (Tuesday).

An eyewitness, Gillian Challoner, told the M.E.N how she was on her way to work on the tram before the incident.

"We got near to the junction near the test and trace centre and the driver started sounding his loud alarm", she said.

"Then all of a sudden the brakes just slammed on.

"We didn't really feel anything but I heard a car speed off and then the driver came out.

"I spoke to the driver when we eventually parked up at Oldham Central and he just said that the car had ran a red light.

"I think the car tried to risk it and squeeze through. Everybody was fine."

A spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester confirmed there was an incident between a car and a tram at Oldham Central.

There were minor delays on the Rochdale line and the incident took around half an hour to clear, the spokesperson said.
