Tram and car crash on Northbourne Avenue

A car and a tram crashed on Northbourne Avenue where it joins Antill Street in Canberra, according to the police.

The collision happened in the middle of the morning. Police were on the scene, with the system running again by shortly after noon.

The extent of the damage to the vehicles is not known.

It's one of the busiest intersections on the light rail system, with a series of complicated filters for road and rail traffic plus pedestrians.

On one corner of the junction are the Transport Canberra offices where the network is monitored with a series of screens showing junctions throughout the city.

Earlier in the year, a 61-year-old man was hospitalised after being hit by a light rail vehicle.

Transport authorities said that incident involved a pedestrian and a tram at the intersection of Northbourne Avenue and Barry Drive at about 9.15am on a Monday.

The ACT government has been urging people to be careful after a series of near misses and actual collisions.

In a video it released, cars were seen narrowly missing the light rail vehicle, some by a matter of centimetres, with 23 near misses being caught on camera.

Many were pedestrians crossing an intersection at the same time as the light rail, unaware a tram was in front of them, some riding scooters or bikes at the time.

The video also showed an elderly man tripping and falling off a platform at Alinga Street station and onto the tracks, just as the tram was pulling in to the station.
