Trainspotting star Ewan McGregor leaves staff stunned after popping into popular Scots diner

Trainspotting star Ewan McGregor has been dubbed a “gent” by staff at a popular Scots diner after he popped in for a visit. The Star Wars icon left staff and restaurant goers stunned after visiting Down The Hatch in South Queensferry, near Edinburgh, on Saturday.

The 51-year-old, from Crieff, happily posed for pictures at the seaside venue and appeared relaxed as he enjoyed the good weather. The eatery shared their exciting news on Facebook and said: “The team in SQ were absolutely delighted to welcome Ewan McGregor today! What a gent!”

Edinburgh Live spoke to Mathew from Down the Hatch who served McGregor. He said: "It was really just a quick interaction, there isn't much to tell. It really just was like 'are you Ewan McGregor? Yeah? Cool.

"People got photos with him and he seemed really nice about it."

His surprise appearance has been met with great excitement by fans on social media with the Facebook post racking up more than 3000 likes. Jade Gray wrote: “Omg imagine running into Obi Wan Kenobi whilst getting a burger. The dream.”

Daryl Reid commented: “How many burgers did he have? Obi wan?” Ross Drummond added: “Choose life, choose Down The Hatch.”

And John Pearson posted: “May the Forth be with him.”

Down The Hatch describe themselves as an authentic Canadian Diner that focuses on Diner style food with locally sourced ingredients. They opened back in 2015 and proved so popular with locals that they were even able to open another location in Edinburgh in 2020.
