Trainspotting's Kelly Macdonald confused by police jargon on Line of Duty

Baffled Line of Duty star Kelly Macdonald admits the hit show's quirky abbreviations leave her scratching her head.

Viewers have told how they spend hours looking up terms like CHIS, OCG, MIT and ARU after watching the crime drama, starring fellow Scottish actor Martin Compston.

Now Kelly, 45, who plays DCI Joanne Davidson in the new series, has said the terminology confused her so much, she was nervous about taking the part in the first place.

She told the Daily Record : "I did have to think about it. The shock, really, was when I read the first episode. Suddenly it was just, ‘Oh, there’s a massive long stream of dialogue about stuff I’ve never heard of'."

"I did have to get over that obstacle in my mind, because I knew that was going to be quite challenging."

Kelly who has been living Stateside since 2010 while starring in TV drama Boardwalk Empire had a lot to catch up on but admits others in the cast and crew helped her out.

She said: “There would be certain acronyms we would discuss in rehearsals. And hair and make-up had a list of what everything stood for."

Edinburgh Live recently told how Kelly spoke of her dread at filming the iconic Line of Duty interview scenes.

Her character, DCI Davidson, attracts the attention of AC-12 while investigating an unsolved murder.

She features in some of the notoriously intense interview scenes, and Kelly admits they were tough but rewarding to work on.

She told Radio Times: “It was like doing a play and it was a real treat to have that kind of material in one scene.”
