Trains suspended for hours as derailment causes travel chaos

Trains were suspended for hours causing travel chaos after a Merseyrail train derailed.

Just after 2pm on Friday, October 28, a Merseyrail train derailed on the tracks just outside of Liverpool Central. The train was traveling at a low speed in a non-public area of the railway and tripped a safety device which is designed to leave a controlled derailment.

Merseyrail confirmed no passengers were onboard the train at the time and nobody was injured in the incident. But due to the train being stuck on the tracks, services on the Northern Line between Sandhills and Moorfields had to be suspended.

A spokesperson from Merseyrail said: "Earlier this afternoon, just outside of Liverpool Central, a train travelling at low speed in a non-public area of the railway tripped a safety device which is designed to lead to a controlled derailment. No passengers were onboard at the time, and no-one was injured.

"We are currently working hard to move the stranded train, although its position means that services are currently disrupted between Sandhills and Hunts Cross."

The provider requested a rail replacement bus service after the incident took place and hundreds of people with suitcases and large bags were pictures waiting at a bus stop to complete their journeys. Into the evening, a dozen trains between Sandhills and Hunts Cross were cancelled.

As of Friday evening there is still major disruption to the Southport, Ormskirk, Kirkby and Hunts Cross lines. Kirkby and Ormskirk services have resumed running to Liverpool Central.

Southport services will continue to terminate at Sandhills and a limited rail replacement bus service is currently in operation between Moorfields and Hunts Cross.

Wirral Line services are unaffected by this issue. Merseyrail say they are expecting trains to run as normal tomorrow, but are urging people to check before they travel.
