Trains leaving Edinburgh Waverley terminated as lightning damages signalling equipment

Trains due to head northbound this evening from Edinburgh Waverley are set to face delays and cancellations after lightning has damaged signalling equipment.

The damage has taken place at Blair Atholl in Perthshire, however the incident is causing disruption on trains from Edinburgh Waverley.

ScotRail have announced that their Edinburgh to Inverness services are being delayed or terminated at Perth.

ScotRail wrote on Twitter: "NEW: Lightning strikes near Blair Atholl have damaged some signalling equipment. This means trains can't run towards Inverness. Network Rail Scotland's team are aiming to be onsite around 18:00."

The damage will also cause chaos for northbound trains from Glasgow this evening.

Earlier today the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) warned heavy thundery weather could causing flooding across the country this evening.

Meanwhile the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms.
