Trains delayed by hours as people travelling to Bristol left in confusion

People travelling to Bristol by train have criticised a lack of communication as services were delayed by hours.

A signalling fault between Swindon and Gloucester has been affecting lines since before 1.30pm today (January 18).

One woman, who did not give her name, said at 5.15pm: "Three of us are trying to get from Stroud back to Bristol (via either Cheltenham or Gloucester) while another is trying to get back to London.

"Trains haven't been running since 3.30pm. There isn't anyone at Stroud station to ask and trains just keep getting pushed back and pushed back.

"The lack of communication is the most annoying part, as the trains just keep getting pushed back at five minutes a time."

At around 5.20pm, the woman finally boarded her train, an hour and 50 minutes later than planned, though her friend was still waiting for a service to London at that time.

"The Stroud waiting room and toilets are also both closed, despite people now having been waiting in the cold for almost an hour just for that one train," the woman added.

Another woman complained on Twitter she had been stuck near Swindon for more than two hours, having been waiting for a service from the Wiltshire town to Stonehouse since 1.30pm.

A Great Western Railway update said: "Following a fault with the signalling system between Swindon and Gloucester all lines have now reopened.

"Train services running through these stations are returning to normal but some services may still be delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised. Disruption is expected until 6.30pm.

"Ticket acceptance is in place which will allow GWR ticket holders to use CrossCountry services between Cheltenham Spa and Bristol Parkway / Bristol Temple Meads in both directions.

"If you hold a valid single, return, or weekly ticket, you will be able to claim compensation for delays of 15 minutes or more. Please keep your ticket and visit GWR.com/DelayRepay."

Great Western Railway has been approached for further comment.
